Friday Fun Fact

Taylor’s Bathing Beach opened in 1925 at Ferry and 21st, and offered “all the modern swimming hole equipment,” including diving boards, water sleds, sliding shoots, pontoons, and logs. The bathing beach operated for about ten years and closed when a 1937 snowstorm blanketed Salem with a record twenty-seven inches of snow over just two days and destroyed the buildings.

Volunteer Opportunity: Deadheaders Wanted to Adopt Rose Beds

What is deadheading? When the roses begin to bloom, spent flowers must be removed for the plant to continue producing additional blooms. Removing those spent blooms is called deadheading. We're looking for volunteers who are willing to commit to one season of deadheading roses at Bush’s Pasture Park. Individuals, couples, families, or friends are encouraged to volunteer. Some may want to adopt two or three beds, others may choose to care for more. Volunteers will receive an initial lesson in deadheading and will then care for their adopted bed(s) at their leisure. Deadheading must be performed when the roses begin to bloom in June and continued weekly through early October.

To learn more about being a volunteer deadheader at Bush’s Pasture Park, please contact Tibby Larson at talarson@cityofsalem.net or 503-589-2197.
