SMPG series update:  The 10-week SMPG (SENG Model Parent Group) series ended in Shoreline on May 9.  Each week, community members gathered in North City to discuss various topics on giftedness and to share ideas regarding the raising of their unique and quirky kids.  Many thanks to Denise Anderson (Vice-President of the Northwest Gifted Child Association) and Valerie Rosman (Edmonds Hi Cap parent advocate) for their work as facilitators and for their tireless dedication to supporting the parent community!

NEXT SHCPA MEETING:  Monday, June 3, at 1:15 p.m.
Interested in connecting with other Hi Cap parents and hearing what we are doing?? Our next meeting will be held at the Shoreline Library (345 NE 175th St.) from 1:15 p.m. - 2:45 p.m. on June 3.  This will be our last meeting for the school year.  Please stop by!

Lastly, we'd like to welcome Keun-Young Choi on board as our new parent representative at Ridgecrest!  Keun-Young has three children with her second grader at Ridgecrest.  We still have parent rep opportunities at Syre, Lake Forest Park, and Shorecrest.  If you are a parent at one of these schools and wish to lend a voice to our efforts, as well as to coordinate Hi Cap communications and news together, let us know at shoreline.hicap.advocacy@gmail.com.

Thank you!

Your SHCPA Leadership Team,
Missy Liu, Megan Menis, Mary Kate Horwood, and Linda Tsai

Many thanks for your participation!

DISTRICT NEWS

SUMMER HI CAP TESTING FOR NEW SHORELINE STUDENTS:  Registration for the Highly Capable (Hi Cap) Program Assessment is now open for students enrolled in Shoreline after January 1, 2019 who were not previously screened or tested during the 2018-2019 school year.

Deadline for registration is Thursday, June 27, by 4:00 p.m. No late registrations will be accepted. Testing is scheduled for Tuesday, July 30. For details on registration, location, times, etc., please refer to the district website.

BOOK AND PODCAST RECOMMENDATION
From Amazon:  A book that offers hope and a pathway to success for parents, teachers, psychologists, and child development experts coping with difficult children.
In Tom Boyce's extraordinary new book, he explores the "dandelion" child (hardy, resilient, healthy), able to survive and flourish under most circumstances, and the "orchid" child (sensitive, susceptible, fragile), who, given the right support, can thrive as much as,
if not more than, other children. Boyce writes of his pathfinding research as a developmental pediatrician working with troubled children in child-development research for almost four decades, and explores his major discovery that reveals how genetic make-up and environment shape behavior.  Listen to the NPR podcast.
2019 CONFERENCES
Registration is open for the SENG (Supported Emotional Needs of the Gifted) conference which will be held in Houston, TX during July 19-21.  The theme will be "Exploring New Frontiers."

WAETAG (Washington Association of Educators of the Talented and Gifted) will be hosting its annual conference during October 18 and 19 at the Bellevue Hilton. The WAETAG website also has a parent resources page.
Does your student have "spring fever"??  Is he/she struggling to stay focused on school work and getting tasks done?  Don't despair. We are bringing educational coach extraordinaire, Seth Perler, back this month with some tips on how you can support your student!  In this video with Debbie Steinberg-Kuntz from the Bright and Quirky Summit, Mr. Perler dives deep into four big steps that will help you help your child.
Who Are We?
The Shoreline Hi Cap Parent Association is a parent-based organization that was formed in the spring of 2016 by those who saw a desire for increased communication, collaboration, and advocacy among the families of our Highly Capable learners.
