MEET THE MAYOR OF MANIZALES, COLOMBIA
The LANZBC invites Members and friends to join us in meeting the Mayor of Manizales, Colombia, José Octavio Cardona León, in Auckland on Monday 27th May.

Manizales is rated as the top city in Colombia for ease of doing business, and it is increasingly important to Colombia’s domestic and international tourism.  It is an important regional educational centre, with more universities per capita than any other city in Colombia.

Manizales’ core economy is the cultivation and production of coffee, including industries involved in the value chain (threshers, cooperatives, exporters). The Mayor’s interests also include the Geothermal, Avocado and Horticulture industries.

Mayor Cardona was the winner of a Municipality Award in Colombian President Duque’s Public Service Excellence Awards for a community conflict prevention/early intervention initiative.

The Manizales’ Mayor and his team have a reputation for innovation: they also won the United Nations Public Service Prize in 2018 for a programme designed to diffuse and resolve a 20 year gang warfare conflict. Manizales has current programmes focused on inclusion of youth with disabilities and an emphasis on sports.

This event will be an informal round-table discussion on the opportunities that exist for cooperation between New Zealand and Manizales, and provides a fantastic opportunity to connect with Mayor Cardona, a rising figure in Colombia.
When: Monday 27 May 2019, 4pm
Where: NZTE/MFAT Offices, Level 6, 139 Quay Street, Auckland
Cost: Free, but numbers limited. Registration required.
