Issue # 10

From the President

Congratulations to Hugh van der Sar, Izzy Workman, Sascha Bowyer, Georgia Hiskins and Sofie Clementi who have all been selected in WA School under 12 squad. In the Under 16 WA Schools team Jazmyn Banyard, Imogen Dawson and Sam Denehy-Johnson (Train On) have been selected in the team. The WA under 21 squad was also released this week and great to see Marshall Puzey and Jesse Regan named.

Both our Premier 1 men and Promo 1 women had good wins over the weekend, positioning themselves in the top half of the ladder. Good to see young Hunter Banyard grabbing his opportunities when our regular Australian goal keeper Tyler Lovell is unavailable. Hunter has only conceded 1 goal in the past 4 games Premier 1 games in his first year playing this grade.

I have seen some great results in the Hockey WA website week. The Prov 4 men’s team are sitting on the top of the ladder and are also completing all the player game statistics. I wonder whether Matt Moore-Crouch sitting at the top of the goal scoring in that competition has anything to do with the statistics diligence! Our Metro 2 women’s team are also playing great hockey and are sitting second on the ladder. I can see a mix of young players and mum’s playing in this grade which is great to see.

Our Premier men and Promo women’s team will be playing at Shenton this Sunday. The Promo 2 girls are on at 12.30 followed by the Promo 1 game. The Premier 1 men’s game is on at 3.30pm followed by the Premier 2 game and then Premier Alliance game.

Good luck to everyone playing this weekend.

Match Review

On a sunny Saturday afternoon, the YMCC Metro 2 “Grass Crabs” recorded a rousing 2-1 victory over bitter rivals John XXIII, tipping their season ledger into positive territory after a disappointing 0-2 start to the season.

The Crabs looked set for a long afternoon when John XXIII slotted an early goal, courtesy of a lucky connection with a flailing stick on the left post. Nonetheless, the Crabs have stared down greater odds over their long history, and set about constructing a memorable victory. Starting with resolute defence from Chicko, Red and Joshie, the Crabs shortened their passing and got the ball moving through the mid-field where the brothers Webbo and Coco (sporting an incredibly clean set of teeth this season) soon got more involved. Eventually the hard work paid off, with Ozzie slicing through the defence before waiting until just the right moment to lay off to Bert. With the poise and balance that only comes from spending many hours in the forward line (despite allocated position) Bert calmly outmanoeuvred the goalkeeper who could only watch helplessly as the ball went into the back of his goals.

The second half was a tense affair as both sides wrestled to gain momentum. Tempers flared over some controversial umpiring decisions, but Capt. Budgie (barely sighted all day after a much-celebrated goal last week) defused the situation by demanding the opposition player “look at the umpire!”. That moment served as an ongoing moral touchstone for the remainder of the game, as players on both sides reminded each other to be respectful of the umpire’s decisions. Eventually YMCC got the breakthrough. While the opposition defence were distracted by Sal screaming out wide, Burt got on the end of a famous Webbo long ball. Despite wrong-footing himself while trying to wrong-foot the goalie, he still managed to sneak it home and we had the upper hand. The desperate defence held out for the rest of the game, helped by some great saves yet again by Sean in goals. In the end, the 2-1 score probably didn’t reflect YM’s dominance of the game after quarter time. Bundy was a constant threat on the left post, and it was only the unlucky bounce of the ball that denied him on several occasions.

There was a good turnout for the post-match analysis, no doubt helped by the rare treat of Chicko providing refreshments. Known for his astute analysis of the game, Andy Webbo declared that we were now clear flag favourites, while his brother was busy booking wine tours online. The famous “Sal’s top-5” (which, of course, is in reality only a top 4 as Sal inevitably includes himself) was eagerly debated, although there was unanimous agreement that Sean deserved a spot for his excellent work in goals. Burt’s two goals were begrudgingly acknowledged, although there was little interest in his recount of all six of his season goals and conversation soon turned to other topics. Politics was high on the agenda with the upcoming election, and the merits of certain politicians were keenly discussed. As the sun set, we made our way home to begin our recovery protocols, looking forward to returning to our spiritual home at Perry Lakes this week

Match Review and Team of the Week: J3/4

The J3/4 Floreat Foxes with coach Paul Bignell and manager Yvonne Driessens

On a sunny saturday morning Perry Lakes was filled with the sound of excitement from all teams taking to the filed for junior matches. Our J3/4 team were ready for their first match of the season. The team of new and returning players were winners before the game even began, as in a true display of sportsmanship a few players offered to help the opposition team who were short of players.

Push back went ahead as planned and is was a great game had by all. With coaches allowed on the field it was a noisy affair. The YM team got one goal on the board which was shared between Angus and Tandia... the ball was headed towards goal but needed a helping hand to get it into the back of the net.

Post match conversation centred around the team name... suggestions included the 'sharks', 'stingrays' and the 'peregrine falcon'... the fasted bird in the world. A few post match lollies help with the thinking and our J3/4 team is now the Floreat Foxes!!!

Congratulations to the foxes on their great match and sportsmanship gaining them recognition as our team of the week.

The mikey and Inclusive Hockey season started last weekend with the Womens Matsers team showing the kids how its done. There was a great turn out and amazing skills on show, stick skills including dribbling and trapping were the focus of the week.

Looking forward to seeing all the players back at Perry Lakes this Saturday.
