The For Love of Country© Essay & Poetry Contest
(For Rising 7th-9th Graders)
Alexandria Library and the For Love of Country© Foundation present the 5th Annual Essay and Poetry contest. This year’s topic is "Who has influenced your life, and why?"
Contest begins on Saturday, June 1.
Rising 7th, 8th and 9th graders – enter "For Love of Country: In My Own Words," and win up to $100! Just create an essay or poem on the topic: "Who has influenced your life, and why?"
Entries are due by Saturday, September 7, 2019 at 5 p.m.

SummerQuest and SummerQuest, Jr.
Special Events Program
|
|
|
SummerQuest is the reading incentive program offered annually at each of our branches. Children ages 6-12 are invited to participate in SummerQuest. There is also a SummerQuest, Jr. for children ages 5 and under. Sign-up begins in late May and the program runs into early August. Weekly events such as movies, crafts, special guest entertainers, and other activities are scheduled as a part of the program. During the summer, please check the Events calendar for special SummerQuest programs.

In this two hour class Lucy Gebre-Egziabher, Fulbright Scholar and professor of cinema at NOVA, will present a lecture and lead you through a screenwriting exercise to help you jump start your own script. This program is part of the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Library Sit In. Get inspired by the feature films and documentaries about Civil Rights and the African American experience in America being screened across the Alexandria Library system in 2019. (More Info)

"Brother Outsider" - 80th Anniversary Film Festival
In celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Alexandria Library Sit-In, the first known sit-in of the civil rights era, the library will screen films that celebrate black history and civil rights. This month Duncan Library will be screening Brother Outsider: The Life of Freedom Fighter Bayard Rustin, a 2002 documentary about one of the great Civil Rights leaders. (More Info)

Library Staff Member Wins Prestigious Award
|
|
|
|
Alexandria Library staff member, Kym Robertson (Talking Book Service Manager -- center), was selected for the 2019 Commission on Aging Public Service Award. The Public Service Award is presented to a City of Alexandria employee who has advanced, improved or otherwise contributed to making Alexandria a more livable community for all ages during the course of their job. Kym was recognized for her service to Alexandria’s senior population — representing the Library's Talking Book Services. The Excellence in Aging Awards Ceremony and Reception took place on Tuesday, May 14, at 5pm in City Hall.
