FIELD NOTES

Get Outdoors Leadville! was born of a community desire to create equitable opportunities to access and enjoy our incredible natural places and outdoor experiences. This is what drives our work every day. We invite you to join GOL! to celebrate these values and recommit to the movement we all believe in: making the outdoors a place for all people, no matter background, color, culture, or financial means.

Please join us on May 29th for the first Leadville Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Outdoors evening where we will do just that alongside neighbors, friends, and colleagues from across Lake County. (Event details below. Hope to see you there!) It will be a great time of community connection, story telling, inspiration, and entertainment (and delicious food, too). We are grateful to partner with organizations and leaders from across the county, state, and country who are also working to advance cultural inclusion in the outdoor industry. Even more so, GOL! is thankful for the passion and efforts in our own little community to make Lake County a welcoming, inclusive environment where people of all ages, abilities, and cultures imagine and create a better world through connections to the outdoors and to each other. Thank you for being a part of GOL! and its work!

Happy trails,
--the GOL! Gang

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

GOL!-LCSD

Our winter wonderland conditions last month made for an awesome Snowpalooza with LCIS on April 12th. All students at the Intermediate School got to play outside after a two weeks of state testing -- donning snowshoes, gliding on Nordic skis, playing in the snow, sledding, and drinking hot cocoa was a great way to celebrate. It was a blast and a well-earned reward for our scholars.

On April 16th, all 7th and 8th grade students went to Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument to collect fossil evidence to support an artistic rendition of the location as it was 34 million years ago. Huge thanks to the Lions Club for their generous grant to support this fieldwork experience and to Molly Hokkanen for making hands-on learning happen for her students.Just 2 days later, in Ari Gino’s class, the 7th graders were back outside measuring various objects to examine the volume and surface area of prisms!

Meanwhile, students in Erin Farrow’s Clay Mosaic mural class are making great progress on their nature-inspired mural. Final installation is scheduled for mid-May -- so excited to have beautiful mountain views on one of the high school’s interior walls.

A highlight in April was the spring semester dual enrollment Lake County High School-Colorado Mountain College Wilderness Experience trip to the canyons of Utah! This semester, we headed west to the Sid’s Mountain region of the San Rafael Swell. Day 1, descending into Salt Wash, we got to do some fun “micro-navigation” route finding, pass packs, and scramble to make our way to the oasis on the canyon floor. Impressive snowfall this winter coupled with some rainstorms meant that we had plenty of water in the desert - a treat! We even got to see a small flash flood after a very localized cloudburst. The trip was filled with laughs, exploration, physical challenges and relaxation, pictographs, and breathtaking canyon views -- and the types of connections that form only when we take time to really simplify life, away from technology, and just connect with one another and the natural world.

Out of School Time Programs

Rockies Rock Adventure Camp is just around the corner! (Which also means SUMMER is just around the corner - WooHoo!) We'll have another 8 weeks of active outdoor fun and learning, starting June 17th. Check out lots of new & exciting aspects this summer on our website. Camp programs are available for youth 1st-9th grades. Register soon - spots are filling fast! Great things come of collaboration! The Better Out of School Time (BOOST) work group has been coordinating efforts to expand and improve out-of-school-time offerings for the community. This summer, both Lake County Library and the Rec Department will be offering programming after Rockies Rock until 5:00 p.m. for those who are interested in extended day programming. See Rockies Rock updates below for more info! We expect this is the first of many coordinated programs to come!

Community Programming

Our April Community Nature Connection was a fun opportunity to express our creativity with natural materials to make clay pendants. Much appreciation to Katie Anderson for sharing her artistic and nature-loving talents to facilitate! Thanks also to Colorado Mountain College for allowing GOL! to host CNC's on campus, and to nature herself for providing the inspiration! (If you haven't picked up your pendant yet, stop by the GOL! offices. They're ready to go home with you!)

Community Nature Connections are a place for individuals to share an area of passion that connects them to our natural world with other community members. Our next Community Nature Connection will be a Forest Bathing experience with facilitated nature walk - join us! We'll meet June 12th, 7:00pm-8:30pm @ CMC. Full details below.
