Windsor’s 127th City Birthday Celebration and Mayor’s Walk

The City of Windsor marks its 127th anniversary of incorporation in 2019, and everyone is invited to celebrate at a free community event packed with fun for the entire family. The annual City Birthday Celebration and Mayor’s Walk takes place Saturday, May 18, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with lots of excitement in store to celebrate our great city.

Annual Mayor’s Walk 10:00 a.m. at Ambassador Park on the Waterfront
  • Gather shortly before 10:00 a.m. at Ambassador Park on the waterfront to warm up with Parks, Recreation & Culture, and Facilities staff. Mayor Drew Dilkens, members of City Council and special guests will be on hand for the event kick-off, and representatives of the Multicultural Council of Windsor and Essex County will be there too handing out country flags representing the homelands of many cultures and heritages that make Windsor such a multicultural and diverse place to live.
  • The Mayor’s Walk will once again proceed along the waterfront from Ambassador Park to Dieppe Gardens. We will pause at the base of the Great Canadian Flag for the singing of our national anthem and then continue back through Dieppe Gardens toward the Vision Corridor adjacent to Adventure Bay and the Chimczuk Museum.
Windsor 127 birthday celebration begins at the Vision Corridor (401 Riverside Drive West) at 11:00 a.m.
  • Mayor Drew Dilkens will welcome the community to the annual birthday party at the Vision Corridor just outside Adventure Bay and the Chimczuk Museum. The party will include free birthday hot dogs and cupcakes (while supplies last); entertainment on the ShowMobile outdoor stage; activities; crafts; face-painting; games; and displays in and around the park. Enjoy 2-for-1 admission to Adventure Bay Family Water Park Presented by WFCU Credit Union and free admission to the Chimczuk Museum, all in celebration of Windsor’s Birthday and International Museum Day.
Temporary road closure
  • Riverside Drive West will be closed between Church Street and Bruce Avenue from 9am-3pm to accommodate the festivities.

For a complete, up-to-date description of the event and a list of activities, please visit our City of Windsor Birthday web page.

These festivities are brought to you by the City of Windsor and are made possible in part through the sponsorship of many businesses and community organizations, including KPMG, Zehrs Markets, Tim Hortons, AM800 CKLW, CTV, YourTV, snapd Windsor, the Windsor Star, Caesars Windsor Cares, Optimist Club Riverside, the University of Windsor, and Windsor Essex Community Foundation.

Jackson Park Facilities Replacement Starting

Improvements to two aging facilities at Jackson Park will begin on Tuesday, May 21, 2019.

Construction crews will be at the park to begin demolition and replacement of the two washrooms located along the entrance to the Queen Elizabeth II Sunken Gardens.

The buildings will be individually fenced off, and some adjacent parking spaces will be taken up, but the majority of parking will still be available to the public.

The central pedestrian entrance to the sunken gardens at the parking lot will remain open. The pedestrian entrances on the north, south and west sides of the sunken garden will remain open throughout construction as well.

The construction of the washroom/maintenance buildings will be completed by mid August and will be immediately followed by the reconstruction of the main parking lot, off Tecumseh Road. The parking lot will be completed by mid October.

To see the area being worked on, watch our video, Jackson Park Improvements (YouTube).

The City of Windsor is continuing to take steps to encourage residents to adopt healthy lifestyle changes. In addition to our Walk Wheel Windsor program, this also includes signing on with Commute Ontario, a free-of-charge program designed to encourage residents to consider transportation options such as walking, cycling, carpooling and taking transit. This partnership comes just in time for Commute Ontario’s province-wide cycling campaign, Bike Month Ontario, which takes place throughout the month of June.

Workplaces and campuses in Windsor are encouraged to visit the Commute Ontario website at www.commuteontario.ca or send an email to info@commuteontario.ca to find out how they can get on board.

Flood Risk Subsides for now but Sandbags Still a Good Option

The risk of overland flooding in Windsor for properties along the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair has subsided for the time being, but sandbags remain available to residents wishing to be prepared should conditions worsen again.

The Essex Region Conservation Authority lowered the flood level from a warning to a watch yesterday, but lake and river levels remain very high, so a shift in wind or a heavy and sustained downpour could still lead to trouble.

The City of Windsor continues to make sandbags available to residents living in a specified area along Riverside Drive East, as they are most in danger of overland flooding. The sandbag station is open to residents living between George Avenue and east to the Town of Tecumseh border, living on the north side of Riverside Drive.

“We opened the sandbag station on Wednesday at noon and we’ve had several residents take advantage,” said City Engineer Mark Winterton. “These are private properties, so we’re doing what we can to help them, while at the same time continuing to monitor the situation for the entire city.”

sandbag station is accessible at 9410 Little River Road (just west of the Little River Bridge and the roundabout) between noon and 8pm on weekdays and 9am to 5pm on Saturdays. The site will remain accessible on Sundays as well, but there will be no staff on hand to provide support, sandbags or shovels. The depot will remain in place until Wednesday, May 22, depending on demand.

The sandbag station will have a City staff member on hand between the hours noted above (Monday to Saturday), but the bags and filling of the bags are the responsibility of residents.

Residents attending the sandbag station will be asked to show proof of address (mail or billing information showing address) and to check in with the attendant each time they visit.

Anyone interested in volunteering to help at the sandbag station is asked to register online with 311 using the “Call for Volunteers” service request.

Flooding has put communities across the province in flood emergencies this spring, and while Windsor is not currently in an emergency, water level monitoring has been increased and will continue for the next couple of months at least.

You can find updated information and helpful links on the City of Windsor website on the Lake and River Flooding page.

Huron Church Reconstruction Set to Enter Phase Two

Improvements to Huron Church Road continue on schedule despite challenging weather conditions. The improvements will provide important infrastructure upgrades and a new smooth surface to a substantial section of the busy roadway between Malden Road and Dorchester Road.

During the week of May 13, 2019, the project will move into the next phase with two way traffic being shifted over to the lanes normally used for northbound traffic. The switch is expected to take approximately three days. Once the transfer of traffic is complete, reconstruction work will commence on the southbound lanes and continue for about six weeks. Access to Huron Church Road from roads on the west side will be closed during this time. Roads and commercial driveways on the east side will be open to right turns in and right turns out.

Detour signage will be in place throughout construction.

Once this work is complete, further information will be relayed to the public regarding the next steps in the reconstruction project.

The 5.5-million-dollar reconstruction project is possible thanks to 3 million dollars in funding from the provincial government under the Connecting Links Program. The City will contribute the remaining funds. The work includes new concrete; replacement of the existing water main and services; street lighting improvements; and new traffic signal infrastructure.

For more details on the project, watch our video with Operations Manager, Dwayne Dawson. For more information on construction and detours, call 311 or visit www.citywindsor.ca.

Museum Windsor - What is this?

Silver speaking trumpet gifted to the Detroit Firefighters from Windsor in 1849.  This gift was made as a thank you to the firefighters for their assistance in saving much of what is now downtown Windsor from a fire, April 16, 1849.

The fire destroyed buildings along the river around the Dieppe Park area, including homes, store houses, saloons & customs buildings.   The Amherstburg Courier and Western District Advertiser (April 21, 1849) recounted, “The fire bells were rung in Detroit, and the whole of their Engines, and all the Firemen…landed at Windsor…”

The trumpet is on display at the Francois Baby House, along with a few other Detroit fire items, until November.   These artifacts are on loan from the Detroit Historical Society.
The City of Windsor conducts surveys as a means of soliciting ideas and opinions from residents so we can better serve the community as a whole.  Check back often to see if a new survey is ready for your input.
