The Fledgling--Week of May 17, 2019

From Mother Megan:

Ben and I closed on our new house on Tuesday.  (It was a bit of a week around here.)
On Monday, we had the final walkthrough, which I quickly learned is dedicated to turning on light-switches, and making sure all the outlets work.
We also discovered that the previous owners had left us numerous "gifts", strategically located around the house, each marked with a printed note that explained what each item was for.
I took great delight in reading each one:  "Here is a ladder which is tall enough to reach from the driveway to the top of the roof.  It is good for fixing gutters."  "This cement is for fixing the holes in the retaining wall.  Critters like to come and dig holes in it.  Mix one part cement with two parts water and fill them in during the winter."  It was all the sort of knowledge that you gather after a lifetime lived in a place, that a newcomer won't know to ask about.  It was invaluable.

When we met the previous owners at the closing, the woman asked me if I saw the notes, and if I thought she was crazy, writing so many.  "Absolutely not," I said.  "They were perfect."

Lots of books get published about how to make for a welcoming church.  I think welcome comes down largely a particular sort of knowledge-sharing.  Greet the newcomer with enthusiasm, of course, learn their name, and then, tell them the mundane secrets.

Not the painful ones--the little ones.  Where the light switches are, why Jesus plays a tuba in the stained glass window, all the funny stories everyone who's been here for years know. Trust them with the details of how to make the coffee so the fuses don't blow.

There's no better way to feel at home then to learn the tiny details of a community.  So, next time you see someone you don't recognize, try sharing a few!

If you have a submission to the Fledgling, send it to the office by Thursday morning for inclusion on Friday.  Bulletin announcements should be into the office by Wednesday morning.
  • If you know of someone who would like to receive the Fledgling, please send their email to the office.

Prayer for the week

Almighty God, whom truly to know is everlasting life: Grant us so perfectly to know your Son Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may steadfastly follow his steps in the way that leads to eternal life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

LEARNING COMMUNITIES INITIATIVE
St. John's Ithaca is participating in our diocese's Learning Communities Initiative (LCI). The goal of the LCI is to help congregations discern what gifts they've been given and what future God is calling them to build. As part of this project, St. John's Ithaca's Learning Communities Guiding Team would like to learn how St. John's parishioners experience God in their everyday lives. A Guiding Team member might ask to have a conversation with YOU where they will ask these or similar questions about your spiritual life:
- Please reflect on a time when you would say you grew spiritually in a significant way.
- What was it about this time of your life that you think caused you to grow spiritually?
- Was there something during this time of your life that you think God was trying to teach or show you?
- Where do you experience God’s presence most often now?

This is a listening exercise; you can say as much or as little as you choose. The Guiding Team member may take notes, but you won't be identified in them and your answers will not be publicized. At the end of the conversation, you'll get a copy of the questions for yourself, and we encourage you to find someone else in the parish and listen while they answer the same questions.

If you would like to volunteer to be interviewed, contact a member of the Guiding Team
(Peg Coleman, Michael Roman, Pam Talbott, Lisa Tatusko and Sara Van Looy).
If you're interested in learning more about the Learning Communities Initiative, see:

LOAVES & FISHES NEED Loaves & Fishes has need of unisex unprinted plain t-shirts for the summer volunteers. They go through quite a few, as sometimes the volunteers forget to leave the t-shirts behind. White, can be lightly used, M/ L. No printing please- even if it doesn't seem potentially offensive.

PRAYER REQUEST FOR MAY The Episcopal Peace Fellowship of Ithaca Area requests prayers in the month of May for prisoners in our penal systems as well as those incarcerated around the worldly, justly or unjustly.  We remember that redemption is an aspect of our faith.  We pray that NYS government will act to make our prisons humane and rehabilitative.  We pray with our brothers and sisters of St. Thomas, Slaterville, and Epiphany, Trumansburg.
