What we're reading this week

Kay: I really like this fun project by Trys Mudford. The blog post gives you a look into his thought process for building a JavaScript pedal board and it may inspire you to improve your "work skills" with a passion project of your own.

Ben: The description of different forms of burnout by Anonymous and Dave Guarino at The Commons was interesting, because I didn't realize that there even were different forms.

Josh: GitHub recently announced their new package registry, which will allow developers to publish and manage packages along with their source code.

Paola: Critics respond to the Pulitzer-Prize-winning Salt Lake Tribune on taking the proactive approach of changing its model and going nonprofit.

Miranda: Interested in making your website more accessible? This article lists some great tools and color accessibility best practices.

Inndy: Maybe self-driving cars won't be a cost-effective replacement for human-driven cars. Maybe they will. I still think it's easier to ride public transit.

MEET THE TEAM

A recent hire!

He's already helped launch client projects, contributed to Largo and INN plugins, and now is rolling out new automations and process improvements for our development work. CJR's conference on how media can responsibly cover climate change is now available on YouTube!

The Guardian has updated its style guide in for coverage of that topic, and wrote about why they're now using "climate crisis" and "global heating" to describe the problem. Another term now in use: "climate science denier."

Anchorage Daily News and ProPublica found that one in three Alaskan communities plain don't have police. Those communities have alarmingly higher crime rates.

WFPL is bringing back the word cloud in their coverage of Kentucky's gubernatorial race.

NPR's Visuals Team wrote an in-depth explainer of how the White Lies podcast page's scrollytelling and audio works, and why those design and development decisions were made.

And in case you missed her tweets, Lívia Labate at Vox Product made a three-week plan for reading the WCAG 2.1 guidelines. She talked about it on last week's OpenNews Community Call.

And now, it is time for a relaxing weekend.
In the foreground, a boy sleeps under a comforter. Behind him is a window, showing a black and cloudy night sky lit by occasional flashes of lightning. Suddenly a lion appears, and presses its nose against the glass. In the background a slim figure appears, eyes glowing. In the next flash, that figure presses her own nose against the glass. A larger woman appears between the lion and the slim woman, clapping her hand on the slim woman's shoulder, startling both the woman and the lion. The gif repeats. The boy is Steven Universe; the slim figure is Pearl and the large figure is Garnet.
