Bike to School Week – Everyone is encouraged to find a self-propelled way to get to school next week. The weather is forecast to cooperate with our plans! Stick around after dismissal on Monday for a demonstration from SteedCYCLE on bike safety & how to change a flat. See you with your helmets on!
Grade 12 Rose Ceremony – The Rose Ceremony is a beautiful internal celebration honouring our lead class and their families as they prepare to head out into the world. Classes have been preparing offerings for these nine students to take them on a journey of memories as they reflect on the years of schooling that have brought them to this present moment. Grade School parents, please be aware that a notice will be coming very soon regarding dismissal this day.
Summer Camp Registrations – Summer Unplugged, our day camp for children ages 6 – 12. Registration closes on June 14! The camp runs during the last week in June, 24 to 28. All the details can be found on our website here: www.vws.ca/programs/summer-camp. Also if you have friends who are curious about Waldorf and want to experience Waldorf Education without enrolling, this is a great opportunity to get a taste.
Family Yard Sale/Swap – June 1st from 10:00 am to noon at the Grade School in the big field (if the weather isn't great, we'll set up in the gym). This is a leave-no-trace event so everything you've got left on your tarp/blanket will have to accompany you home. This is a Waldorf community event so let's work together to keep the quality and condition of goods high and appropriate. Suggested items: snow sports gear, kids bikes and helmets, outdoor clothing and boots, wool clothes, concert clothing (ie: black pants, white shirts, black shoes). Whether you buy, sell, swap, gift or receive is up to you. Supervised kiddos are welcome to join the fun!
Christmas Fair Visioning Meeting – Come and join in the conversation about the evolution of the Christmas Fair as we envision a refreshed Fair. We’ll gather in the Music Room on Wednesday, June 12 at 6:30 pm to share ideas, experiences, and inspiration while creating a plan for the coming years. Grade 4 Students received a special visit from OWL. The OWL (Orphaned Wildlife) Rehabilitation Society is a non-profit organization whose staff and volunteers are dedicated to public education and the rehabilitation and release of injured and orphaned raptors. CLASS PLAYS IN WALDORF SCHOOLS

Class plays are at the forefront this spring!
At the beginning of the month, Grade 8 presented The Twelfth Night and last week Grade 2 shared Big Sage, Little Sage. This week Grade 1 did two presentations of their class play, Grade 12 will present this weekend, and Grade 3 will be on stage on June 7!
"The class play gives a teacher many chances to build the social strength in the class. It often also reinforces aspects of the curriculum. It changes the routine in a stimulating artistic way that provides relief from the steady rhythm of the days and weeks and months of the school year. This relief returns when the regular rhythm returns and the class feels the ordinary soothing events of life replace the dynamic and artistic tension of preparing a play and performing it.
Plays in a Waldorf school are called “pedagogical” dramas for a very good reason. They are aids to the class teacher in developing skill and capacity in students, strengthening the sense of interdependence in the whole class, and brightening the creativity of the class through drama." DEVELOPMENT UPDATE
As we draw nearer to the end of the school year, the many different aspects of development are brought into focus through honest conversations about what was, what is and what’s to come. While we continue to work on the day-to-day tasks associated with all of the many exciting events and activities scheduled for the next four weeks, we are also reviewing, planning and building for the years ahead.
Recent discussions with parents, colleagues, alumni and alumni parents have all included a rich sharing of diverse perspectives on fundraising, marketing, events, admissions, parent education, and community engagement. The common thread is that no matter what is being discussed, there must always be a priority placed upon creating space for everyone to have their voices heard.
During one of my first touchpoints with the VWS, when I was considering enrolling my daughter, I was speaking with a seasoned community member who shared with me that one of the many unique things about a Waldorf school is that parents actively participate in forming the school community.
While participation may look different for every family, our work in Development is to ensure that we are actively listening to our community so we continually offer a variety of ways to participate and contribute that speak to the needs, wishes and vision of our ever-changing community. Thank you all for being a part of that.

The 5th Grade is often referred to as the “Golden Age” of childhood. At this stage of development, students enter a period of enhanced consciousness and sense of self as individuals. In class, study is focused on the history and geography of Ancient India, Persia, Mesopotamia, Egypt & Greece. The year culminates with the Greek Olympiad – a celebration of grace, truth, beauty, and skill.
