Hello Friends & Fellow Gardeners!
Happy Spring! We have had a great season so far. Our plants are growing nicely and the Nursery is brimming with beautiful plants ready to go home to your landscapes. As you may know, Behmerwald Nursery originally just grew and sold perennial plants to landscapers and other nurseries so our roots are literally in perennials but right now we love our annuals. Annual flowers can offer flowers, texture and scents that are not available in perennials. We have some really cool annuals at the Nursery right now. Even the names are great- Dino Eggs, Angel wings, Redneck Girl, Biltmore Ballgown and T-Rex to name a few.
We have been seeing a great deal of rain in our area recently. Looking for things that will survive in swampy conditions? Some plants can even thrive with “wet feet.” Roots need to be able to take up nutrients and some plants have evolved in ways to maximize soggy soils. Many natives may be good choices for your landscape where puddles form and rivers run.
Carex spp ( Sedge), Calamagrostis ( Feather Reed Grass), and Sorghastrum nutans (Indian Grass) look pleasing. Mixing these with flowering plants and shrubs will provide seasonal interest. Perennials like Asclepias incarnate (Swamp Milkweed), Chelone oblique (Turtlehead), and Tradescantia virginiana (Spiderwort) are a few perennial choices. We also recommend shrubs like Clethera alnifolia (Summersweet), Itea virginica (Sweetspire), and Ilex virginica (Winterberry Holly) for added seasonal color.
If you desire taller shrubs and trees for these areas, native Viburnums and Aronia (Chokeberry) can be utilized nicely. Trees such as Amelanchier (Serviceberry) and Magnolia virginiana have pretty flowers and can withstand very moist sites. There is a plant for every situation. You can find other recommendations on our Information Sheet here.
