Fifth Grade
We had a great week in Fifth Grade science classes learning about what plants need to grow and then finishing off the week with some guest speakers. On Thursday we were able to do some pre-activities to get us ready for our field trip to the Johnson Art Museum. Students were able to share what they knew about the Ancient Central American civilizations and learn a bit more from two wonderful people who work at the museum.
Then, on Friday, we had two wonderful veterinarians in to help students begin learning about animal nutrition, the circulatory system and cardiovascular system. Students were able to see many different x-ray images, learn the importance of heartworm medicine for dogs, and then get a chance to listen to the heart of a dog and their own heart.
In ELA we are finishing up writing our letters to a Fourth grader. Students are excited to send the letter to the Elementary School and then hopefully hear back from them soon. We also are working on reading Hatchet which has been a lot of fun. We look forward to reading the entire book in the next few weeks and doing some fun activities that go along with the it.
Seventh Grade
Seventh grade students will be on a field trip to Taughannock Park on Monday, June 24th. We will be doing outdoor activities such as a stream survey, Floating Classroom, and a walk. Please make sure your student comes prepared for the weather and has appropriate footwear so that he or she can enjoy all of the activities the day has to offer. Students should pack a lunch or if they choose to buy lunch, they can turn in the form that will be handed out at the end of May.
On a beautiful sunny Saturday, Mrs. Dawson, Ms. Dawson and Mr. Rocco were joined by 7 math students to form the “Math Elites” team for the May Day 5K. We posed for a picture before the race and then took off at our own paces. Some ran together with friends and some worked toward a PR! The teachers ran together at a comfortable pace. We all got medals for our efforts and enjoyed delicious post-race food. Thanks to the parents who made it possible for the kids to join us. We had a GREAT time!
This week was College and Career Readiness week in the middle school. As part of the week we talked about our goals and dreams for our futures. We made a bulletin board in the 2nd floor hallway to share these goals with others.
Eighth Grade
There will be an informational parents meeting for the Washington, DC trip on May 29th from 6:30-7:30pm in the Middle School gymnasium.
In English class, we are reading the novel All the Broken Pieces. Against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, a young boy tries to find his place between two cultures. We are looking at how war affects people, at how people overcome conflict, and at what it means to be at home. We are also learning a bit about music and baseball as well as the power of figurative language.
Algebra 1 students are working hard this weekend on a self grading online assignment due Monday and they are also working on Regents problems focusing on linear, quadratic and exponential regressions. By the end of this assignment they should be masters at entering lists, performing calculator regressions and determining which function is the best fit.
If you are looking to support your child with their Algebra, sign into their Google Cassroom with them and see all the materials. We have class videos posted, online resources and more. We are working on hitting a happy medium with study time - our goal is an hour a day (more if students feel they have time in their schedule) but not so much that they get very stressed. Any support you can provide your child by giving them the time to work and also making sure they don’t work too long is very much welcome.
Music
The 5th and 6th grade chorus and band concert is on Tuesday, May 21st at 7pm in the high school auditorium. Chorus students should arrive in the high school chorus room by 6:20pm.
