Coming soon!!
Judas Creek Residents:
As part of their commitment to safer communities, the Yukon Government has been working to assign a civic address to all residential properties in Yukon.

Your civic address consists of a house number and a street name. This address will help ensure that the fire department, ambulance or RCMP can quickly and easily find your home when they are called in an emergency.  This civic address does not change anything for mailing or property tax purposes as your mailing address and lot number remain the same.

Your number plate has been provided for you by Yukon government and is available for pick up at the Marsh Lake Community Centre.
Marsh Lake Shuffleboard Invitational Tournament

It’s Spring and flowers and wildlife are out! Bears are in hyperphagia and they are desperately trying to fatten up on roots and bulbs.  Please manage your attractants by following the recommendations in WildWise Yukon’s (http://wildwise.ca/tips-and-resources/#tip-of-the-season) backyard checklist and keep people, pets and wildlife safe!

Please report wildlife sightings and encounters to the TIPP line

1-800-661-0525

Wildlife-safe property checklist
o Garbage, recycling and compost are stored indoors or in a bear-proof container.
o Lawns are mowed and weeded.
o Native and non-native plants that bears eat are removed from high-human use areas and playgrounds. Brush close to homes or along walkways is removed.
o Fruit trees or berry bushes are removed or have electric fencing around them and no fallen fruit are left on the ground.
o Vegetable gardens are fenced with electric fencing, and vegetables are harvested as soon as they ripen; or vegetable gardens are replaced with flower gardens.
o Bird feeders are stored away March-November or are bear-proof. Birdseed is stored securely indoors.
o Pets are fed inside and their food is stored indoors. Dog bones are not lying around the yard. Cats and other small pets are kept indoors when unsupervised.
o BBQ is clean and all grease and food residues are removed after each use. BBQ, meat or fish dryers and smokers are stored indoors or in a secure shed.
o Freezers and all food are kept in your house or in a secure, locked shed.
o Chicken coops have electric fencing around them to protect the birds from bears.
o Windows and other entrances are secure with round door knobs and dead bolts.
o Potential den sites like crawl spaces under decks and buildings are blocked.
o No trash, groceries, animal feed, coolers or any smelly items are stored in your vehicle or in the back of a pick-up truck. We’re serious. They can and will break in if they want what’s in your vehicle.
o Refrigerators, hot tub covers, bicycle or snowmobile seats, fibreglass insulation are not accessible to bears or are replaced with non-formic acid alternatives, or are sprinkled with lime.
o Petroleum products are stored in an area where bears cannot access them.
o Actively encourage your neighbours to remove and/or secure attractants
Cellular repeater tower in Judas Creek?

Over the last few weeks I've received some concern, both verbal and written, about the possible installation of a cellular tower in Judas Creek. Unfortunately I can't just copy and paste the letters into this column, because they contain personal opinion and some conjecture. There are, understandably, differing opinions on this matter but we need to stick to the facts. So here I lay them out as we know them:

Judas Creek residents have long complained about poor cell phone coverage in the ward. In response, Bell Mobility commissioned Medallion Wireless to procure a site to rectify the problem. The topography of Judas Creek was examined by Medallion Wireless and it was determined that a 60-foot tower placed at specific location on Strawberry Hill would provide line-of-sight signal to the greatest number of rooftops in the community. I spoke personally to a representative of Medallion Wireless and tried to steer the company towards the Fire Hall, as it was an already somewhat industrial site; was elevated, and has few houses nearby. The Fire Hall was considered, but the topography of the southeastern reaches of Judas Creek would have limited its effectiveness.

Medallion Wireless has now contacted the owner of the specific lot on Strawberry Hill that would provide optimum placement.

A cellular tower is not a microwave tower. There is a lot of competing information on the health effects of various frequencies and wavelengths of different signals, and the relative safety of being near a cellular tower. Please, before jumping to any conclusions,  take a few minutes to read what Health Canada and the American Cancer Society have to say about Cellular towers, and form an informed opinion based on the objective information that we have available to us.

If you feel you need to register your concerns, the best place to do so is with your Marsh Lake  Local Advisory Council representative. The Marsh Lake Local Advisory Council contact page is here: http://marshlakeyukon.ca/lac.html
