Join a round table discussion of Oakland campaign finance reform proposals

Jodie Smith and Jonathan Stein, current and past Chairs of the Oakland Public Ethics Commission, will help us better understand how the City could redesign its campaign finance laws to expand community participation and equity in the campaign process and reduce the influence of big money in politics. Proposals currently before the PEC might go far toward creating a better system of campaign finance laws and activities that would allow every Oakland voice to be heard and valued as part of the candidate campaign process.

A special event presented by Make Oakland Better Now! and SPUR. This free informative event will bring local leaders together to discuss the city's budget process, elected officials' goals and priorities, and fiscal future. Scheduled for Monday, May 20 at 6pm, at SPUR's location in Downtown Oakland (1544 Broadway, Oakland, CA 94612). The event will feature guest speakers Mayor Libby Schaaf, Council member Rebecca Kaplan, Edward Gerber, Chair of the Oakland Budget Advisory Commission (and MOBN! board member), and Make Oakland Better Now!'s Carrie Crespo-Dixon.

Background: As Oakland begins the preparation of its 2019–2021 budget, two background reports have already been released to the City Council. One report features the financial realities that the city faces in adopting the next budget, while the second details a five-year fiscal forecast. The realities of both reports show a clear structural deficit and substantial financial challenges. What will it take for the city to balance a budget when faced with these pressing issues?

Upcoming EdSource Webinar: Avoiding the fiscal cliff: How adequate school funding can close equity gaps

Tuesday, May 21, 2019

3:00PM to 4:00PM

There is a growing consensus that California's current school funding is not sufficient to provide an equitable, high-quality education to all of the state's more than 6 million students, more than 60 percent of whom live in poverty, are learning English as a second language or have other special needs. But researchers estimate school funding would need to increase by nearly a third to fill this deficit and — despite widespread agreement that more funds are needed — passing policies to increase funding adequacy remains challenging.

How can California find the resources to increase school funding to a level that could meet the needs of its diverse student population? And how can the money be best spent to reduce achievement gaps and increase opportunities for all the state's students? Join EdSource's Louis Freedberg and Ryan Smith of the Partnership for LA Schools along with a distinguished panel of experts on school finance and equity to explore what it would take to get to a fair and adequate level of funding for all schools.
Speakers:
  • Jennifer Imazeki, professor of economics, director of San Diego State University's Center for Teaching & Learning and author of a report on funding adequacy for the Getting Down to Facts II research project.
  • Kim Pattillo Brownson, vice president for policy and strategy, First 5 LA, and a leading advocate for early education and intervention, particularly for children from low-income families.
  • John Affeldt, managing attorney at Public Advocates, where he focuses on educational equity issues through litigation, policy advocacy and partnerships with grassroots organizations.
  • Joan Sullivan, CEO, Partnership for Los Angeles Schools and former Los Angeles deputy mayor of education and teacher and principal of a high-poverty, high-performing traditional school in New York.
The EdSource webinar, part of an ongoing series of deeper dives into the Getting Down to Facts research released earlier this year, is co-sponsored by Policy Analysis for California

Register now for this live webinar on Tuesday, May 21, at 3 p.m.
