NATIVE PLANT GARDENING

Saturday, May 25  9-10am

Interested in adding Montana Native Plants to your landscape? Join us to learn from this experienced and enthusiastic native plant gardener on how best to achieve this!

Sue Leferink lives in East Helena, Montana and has been a gardener in the Helena area for over 20 years. She is an active member of the Helena Garden Club affiliated with the Montana Federated, Rocky Mountain Regional and National Garden Clubs. She is currently the Montana Federation of Garden Club's Xeriscaping and Bee chairman. She has completed the National Garden Clubs Landscape Design Consultant course series and is a Master Gardener through Montana State University Extension Services. Sue is also a member of the Montana Native Plant society. She has provided workshops on gardening for wildlife at International Migratory Bird Day, Tizer Botanical Gardens and Arboretum, the National Federation of Wildlife, Montana Wild and across the state for other local garden clubs. Over the past 10 years she has worked on several local garden projects in Lewis and Clark and Jefferson County. In 2013, she led a team of several volunteers and experts to create a Certified Wildlife Habitat Demonstration Garden and Bee exhibit at the Montana Wild Education center in Helena across from Kessler School. In 2018, she expanded this to add a new Pollinator Pathway garden to provide habitat for butterflies focusing especially on the decline of the Monarch butterfly.

CONTAINER GARDENING

Seasonal flower containers can be so much more than geraniums and petunias. Although we love both of those! Check out some of these fun combos we have put together for our clients around town.

Top Left: (Part Shade) Red Star Dracena, Geranium, Heuchera 'Green Spice', Lamium
Top Right: (Part Shade) Red Star Dracena, Heuchera 'Green Spice', Hosta, Brunnera

Stop by today to check out our great selection of container plants and get advice from one of our designers.

SPRING PERENNIALS @ Gardenwerks

Siberian Bugloss
Brunnera macrophylla
Running out of ideas for your shade garden? Try this stunning, tough perennial. It's foliage provides a fabulous contrast to other shade loving plants and brightens any shady spot with small forget-me-not like flowers in spring. Prefers cool, moist soil but tolerates dry shade quite well.  Paired here with chives.
Pussytoes
Antennaria dioica 'Rubra'
Low growing, mat forming perennial has attractive grey foliage and small fuzzy pink flowers in spring. Does well in poor soils (must be well drained!) and is deer resistant. Plant in full sun between pavers, in rock gardens, or other dry spots in your garden.
Biokova Geranium
Geranium x cantabrigiense 'Biokova'
Wonderful groundcover for either part shade or a bright sunny area. White flowers with pink accents appear in early summer and the fall foliage is an outstanding red color. Easy to grow, aromatic foliage and an extended bloom time; you can see why this is a go-to!

LAWN ALTERNATIVE?

Have you ever considered converting your lawn? Manicured lawns have become the default landscape across our country, despite the drastic differences in growing conditions. Most bluegrass lawns require 30-40 inches of water over the growing season. In the Helena area we receive, on average, 12 inches of precipitation annually. There are plenty of plants that are adapted to growing here and can thrive off much less water. Find out more beneficial reasons to reduce our lawn areas and diversify our plantings.
