NEWSLETTER : 19th May 2019

Hi everyone,

What a week it's been.

On Thursday we enjoyed a whole host of activities in addition to our usual groups and services.

In the morning our cookery class met to learn interesting ways to cook with mince creating an array of delicious and nutritious dishes to sample both at the class and to take home to try with loved ones. Our aspiring chefs learnt how to use different herbs and spices to add punch and taste, the possibility of adding nutrients by including cheese, cream, egg and butter to potatoes for extra calcium and protein and how to cook enough 'base' meat to provide enough for two days days, saving time and energy.

Whilst the cooking was taking place June was literally 'in the field' digging over our new allotment, luckily with some help from the Park Rotary Club who have been so generous with their time and expertise helping us to get the site ready for action in the next week or so. We hope to start our gardening activities on Thursday 30th May, if you are interested to be involved have a chat with June. The site is on Mile Road and the allotment committee have been so kind and welcoming to us, we sense this is going to be  a great success and wonderfully relaxing and enjoyable project. The plot is fully accessible for people with limited mobility and the coffee shop which is open every Thursday morning is directly opposite our plot. We plan to be on site every Thursday from 10.30am- 12.15pm so come on down and join us whether you are a gardener or not, its a lovely place to be,
  l

In the afternoon the Tibbs 4 Tea team met at Marston Forest Centre for coffee and a walk - this was a lovely relaxed opportunity to meet and share together, take a stroll and generally enjoy a great afternoon with friends.

Meanwhile Jeni and Alison our fantastic music therapists were representing Tibbs at a National conference organised by Arts 4 Dementia entitled  “Towards Social Prescribing (Arts & Heritage) for Dementia” . With over 30 speakers from across the UK this was an important and valuable event and Jeni and Alison returned buzzing with ideas and information.

And then....

A busy Thursday followed by a busy Sunday as Music 4 Memory joined Fusion on stage at the Harpur Trust 'Have a Go' Day entertaining and energising the audience as they sang, danced and had fun in true Music 4 Memory style. Thanks to Fusion for inviting us to join you- we're really looking forward to working with you over the next few months  as we work towards our next Hear and Now adventure.

And whilst all this was going on Alison, Margaret, Gerard and I were representing Tibbs at the Lord Lieutenants Annual Service of Thanksgiving for Voluntary Organisations in the beautiful setting of St Mary's Church, Woburn. Representing Tibbs Margaret read the second lesson before the sermon in which The Bishop of Bedford remembered the power and passion of Music 4 Memory when he had attended an event at which we were involved last year.

All in all a busy week for Tibbs, working together as a community reaching into the community sharing our message of inclusivity, fun, and that together we can achieve anything.

Remember this week that we have the Dementia Action Week event at the Higgins Museum on Wednesday afternoon and the Tea Dance at Oakley Village hall on Saturday. Full details further in the newsletter. Also remember the European elections take place on Thursday so no Music 4 Memory at Oakley and next Monday we have another bank holiday.

With best wishes

Sarah Russell, CEO

Calling all Thespian's,Theatre Dames and Diva's

We have the opportunity to work with professional Theatre company 'Haste' www.hastetheatre.com to enjoy a series of three drama workshops. These exciting workshops will take place at the Place Theatre on Bradgate Road, Bedford. Sessions will take place on Wednesday 12th June, 26th June and 3rd July from 10.30am- 1.00pm, including a refreshment break.

These sessions are open to anyone with a dementia or memory or cognitive change and/ or their families. Spaces are limited and due to the nature of the sessions you should be able to commit to attending each of the three workshops.

This is a great opportunity to work alongside professional actors to develop your skills, to learn new means of expression as well as to have fun. Whether you've trodden the boards, stood in the limelight, received a standing ovation or not you'd be very welcome to come along and enjoy this special activity.

If you would like to book a place or want further information please get in touch with June June.kuria@tibbsdementia.co.uk

 Hear and Now
Plans are starting to formulate for our next Hear and Now Collaboration with Fusion Youth Choir and the Philharmonia Orchestra supported by Orchestra's Live  {who recently released a report highlighting dynamic music and arts projects supporting older people- take a look it's quite impressive: http://www.orchestraslive.org.uk/news/bingo-to-bartok/ }.

The main project will take place in October and November and as it's our tenth year of the project we're anticipating that this will be bigger and bolder than ever and a real celebration of our fantastic ongoing partnership. This year we hope to draw in other creative mediums including dance and the use of images and video recording. We're looking for people from Tibbs who might be interested to work alongside some of the Fusion youngsters to capture the project on film and help design graphics and images as part of the performance. It sounds very exciting and could appeal to anyone with skills in filming and photography or none. There will be a training workshop on the afternoon of Thursday 30th May if you are interested, to meet others and to learn some of the skills required. If you're interested please get in touch with Jeni or myself and we can discuss and give you more details. Why not get involved in something new or develop your skills and put them to good use.
