Summer is here and the time is right to stock up on beach books, read those classics you've been meaning to read for years, or explore a new interest. Join us on June 1st and 2nd at Books Among Friends in Northgate Mall for another great Big Book Sale. Because Sears is now closed, please enter the mall through the doors near Plato's Closet and turn left at the carousel. Look for the sign if you are unsure. Don't forget, members can enter the sale at 10:00 AM and the sale is open to the public from 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM, so make sure your membership is up to date. We'd love to see you Sunday afternoon for the bag sale, as well. See the graphic below for more information.

We have the best members and donors. Recently, Dan Maxwell, an avid student of the Civil War, donated a 60 volume set of
Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States  history.  Because of the value of this wonderful donation, we are selling the whole set through our eBay store for $2300. If you would like to get more information (or bid on the books), please visit the eBay page.  You can also see the books at the book sale this weekend.

The annual meeting of the Friends of the Durham Library will be held on June 13, 2019 at our book store, Books Among Friends, at 7:00 PM. We will be inducting incoming board members, thanking outgoing board members, and electing officers for the 2019-2020 term. The annual meeting is open the general membership. If you would like to attend, please contact us at fodlcontact@gmail.com so we can have plenty of chairs available.
Staff Day

Every year in the fall and spring, over 150 staff members from all locations of Durham County Library gather to share expertise and important updates and participate in training and professional development. The library’s spring Staff  Development Day was held on Wednesday, May 15 at Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.

Library Director Tammy Baggett shared library updates and presented the Director’s Award to the very deserving Kathleen Hayes.  Staff heard from the Summer Reading Committee, Durham Library Foundation Executive Director Karen Wells, the Strategic Planning Committee, and others. They even participated in a hands-on fire extinguisher training.

Thanks to the generous support of the Friends of the Durham Library, staff enjoyed breakfast and lunch catered by Hope Valley Diner and Catering. In the afternoon, Friends Board member Angela Zoltners presented Floyd Harris with an academic scholarship, which he will use to pursue a class in social media and digital marketing in the fall. Graceon “Gracey” Gordon was awarded the second scholarship, which she will put toward her master’s degree in library science this year and next.

Felicia A. Leggett, Friends Board Secretary and Scholarship Committee Chair, visited East Regional Library to present Gracey Gordon with a Friends Academic Scholarship. Felicia and Gracey were joined by Lauren Doll, the Manager of East Regional Library, and two previous Friends Academic  Scholarship recipients, LaShaunda Rogers and Ally Zomchek.
