May Program Reminder

THE PEOPLE, HISTORY, AND WILDLIFE OF NAMIBIA

Tuesday, May 21 -  6:45 p.m.
THE KAUFFMAN FOUNDATION CONFERENCE CENTER
, 4801 Rockhill Rd. KCMO 64110, in the Paseo Room - Social time from 6:00-6:45 p.m. Business and announcements will precede the meeting. Cultural anthropologist and conservationist Ryan Klataske will present a program "People and Wildlife: An Anthropologist’s Journey to Namibia." African wildlife faces an array of formidable threats, from habitat loss and fragmentation to human-wildlife conflict and illegal trafficking. Similar threats to wildlife exist around the world. Fortunately, in southern Africa, people are working together to manage and conserve wildlife and natural resources in innovative ways. For the past decade, Dr. Klataske has studied wildlife management and conservation in Namibia, documenting these important efforts and the intersecting issues of ranching, race, land, and livelihoods. This talk will provide a broad introduction to Namibia, including its people, history, wildlife, and the lessons it can teach us about conservation and community in the Great Plains. Vivid photography will compliment Dr. Klataske’s stories.

Please feel welcome to join our host committee and Ryan at Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue on the Plaza before the meeting. Meet at 5:00 p.m., and ask to be seated with the Audubon party. Otherwise, join us at the Kauffman Foundation at 6:00 p.m. for socializing. Business and program begin at 6:45.

Meetings will resume in September 2019. Watch our website and BurroughsAnnounce for details. Special events and times may be scheduled, such as our Annual Dinner / No general meetings in June, July or August.

June Field Trips

TO VARIOUS MIDWEST LOCATIONS

Burroughs field trips are free to Audubon members and the public, and people of any age or level of experience are welcome to participate! Any trip may involve walking on a variety of terrain and surfaces, but some trips will be more strenuous than others. Trip leaders can advise you of the physical activity involved. Since we visit a number of wild areas and habitats, we respectfully ask that your pets not accompany us on the trail. If they're not given to vocal excitement, crated pets in vehicles are fine.

Dunn Ranch and Pawnee Prairie Natural Area - Join us as we search for species such as Upland Sandpiper, Black-billed Cuckoo, Sedge Wren, Henslow’s and Grasshopper Sparrows, and Bobolinks. Meet at 6:00 a.m. in the Liberty commuter lot at I-35 and U.S. 69 Hwy. (Excelsior Springs exit) for carpooling.

Saturday, June 8 - 7:30 a.m.
Blue River Parkway Breeding Bird Census - We will meet at the Blue River Parkway Trailhead and Minor Park Tennis Courts parking lot and search the Blue River looking for summer residents that breed in Jackson County.
