Untreated Hearing Loss Linked to Depression & Dementia
New studies suggest older adults with untreated hearing loss may develop additional health problems that lead to more frequent hospitalizations and higher health costs.

More than 38 million adults in the U.S. have hearing loss, including two-thirds of those over 70, according to a report in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Researchers at Johns Hopkins found that untreated hearing loss can increase the risk of developing dementia by 50 percent and depression by 40 percent.

The Fulton County Commission oversees a $1.1 Billion budget, which funds Children & Family services, Senior Centers & services, Mental Health, County Courts (nearly all cases but misdemeanor & minor traffic offenses), Housing Assistance, Elections, Libraries, Arts Centers, Animal Control and more.

A Fulton County Commissioner's term lasts four years. The term for Fulton County Commission District 6 ends December 31, 2020. Due to the untimely death of Commissioner Darnell, the individual who wins this year's election will have to run for election again in November 2020 for County Commission District 6's next four-year term: 2021-2024.

Learn more about the Fulton County Commission at the link below.

Instead of waiting until November's regular 1st Tuesday election date, the Fulton County Commission has called for a special, September Election to replace the late District 6 Commissioner, Emma Darnell. Commissioner  Darnell passed May Sunday, May 5, 2019.

There will be several weeks of Early Voting, likely beginning the last week of August.

ELECTION DAY:
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2019
Early Voting: October 14-November 1
At nearly 100 square miles — the size of Atlanta — the City of South Fulton is the 5th largest city in the state, with 100,000 residents and a $100 million budget.

South Fulton's City Councilmembers make policies to fund & govern South Fulton Police, Fire and Municipal (City) Court (which covers most misdemeanor & traffic violations), Parks & Recreation programs, Land Use, Building & Zoning permits, Business & Alcohol licenses, Garbage Collection and Public Works for city streets (including potholes and landscaping on non-State Roads).

City Council terms are four years each. As is the case with the County Commission, City Council seats are been staggered so only half of the Council's eight members are up for election at one time. Council Districts 1, 3, 5 & 7 are up for election this November. The Mayor & Council districts 2, 4 & 6 are up for election November 2021.

Note: In South Fulton, City Council elections are held during odd years (2017, 2019, 2021, etc.), County & State offices are held even years. (2020, 2022, etc.).

standing (l to r): Councilman khalid (District 6) ● Mayor Bill Edwards ● Mayor Pro tem Mark Baker (District 7)
City Council meets at least twice per month — 2nd & 4th Tuesdays. However, because South Fulton is still a new city, City Council calls several additional Special & Emergency Meetings throughout the year. Additionally, most City Council members hold several town halls annually and attend HOA, PTA, School Board meetings and other community events.
