DBS NEWSLETTER

17th May 2019

From Mark McVeigh, Principal

Dear DBS Parents,

Ms Van Gil’s Y8 Shark Class provided one of the highlights of the year, with their stimulating assembly on the important issues of discrimination and the environment. The Y8 students were creative, articulate and witty: a true inspiration to the rest of the school.

This week, Ms Babb appointed Ambassadors of Science, and Mrs McVeigh launched the Denla Cares logo competition. There was a hugely positive EY2 assembly on kindness from Ms Hammond’s Bumblebee class and Ms Mushtaq’s Caterpillar class. It is so important that our students regularly consider how to be thoughtful and caring.

It was great to hear about the successes of our badminton teams on Tuesday, as they competed well in the GBAC tournament, with DBS being placed second overall. We are grateful to Mr Mann and Ms Pym for their expertise and support.

Finally, it was good to see many of you at Parent Time this afternoon, and to witness so much excellent work by your children. There is much parental engagement planned for next week, and may I recommend the Summer School Parent Information sessions on Friday morning: there is a wonderful range of activities on offer, with DBS teachers delivering an excellent programme in English.

Lisa joins me in sending you our very best wishes. We look forward to seeing you back at school on Tuesday next week.

Please join us on Friday 24th May, where you can find out more about the DBS Summer School 2019. This will include key details, themes and more about what this exciting English Programme has to offer. You will also have the opportunity to meet a range of Summer School teachers who will be involved.

On Thursday, the EY2 Caterpillar and EY2 Bumblebee classes delivered an assembly all about the importance of kindness. They opened the show with a short video called “Colour the World with Kindness” which was all about how doing kind things for other people can brighten up their world. They then explained the essential agreements that they had decided together, to ensure a kind and happy environment for everyone.  This was followed by a song about kindness which they sang beautifully along with some amazing actions!

The children then told us about how everyone has their own invisible bucket of happiness that they carry. When we’re kind to others, we fill their bucket and our own, but when we’re unkind to others we empty their buckets and our own.  This is why it’s important to do kind things. What kind thing could you do to fill someone’s bucket today?

This week, Y2 visited the Digital Plaza to challenge their understanding of position and direction. They participated in a series of challenges aimed at reinforcing and extending the concepts they have been learning in Maths.
Last Friday, the Y3 children had a fantastic afternoon at Climb Central Bangkok! Upon arrival, the children put on their climbing shoes and harnesses and received their instructions. Over the course of the day, they showed great determination and resilience to complete their climbs. They faced a mountainous task, climbing some of the toughest rocks the centre had to offer. The day was a great opportunity for them to try something new and was an exciting introduction to their Science unit on Rocks! This week in class, they have created posters providing information about sedimentary, igneous, metamorphic rocks and the rock cycle, as well as classifying rocks based on their properties.
The Y4's had a great time shopping with pounds and pence today! The children took turns to be either the seller or the customer and it was lots of fun!
The Y4's made their own special t-shirts showing the digestive system!
On Tuesday, our U11 and JV badminton teams travelled to Brighton College to compete in the GBAC Competition. A great standard of badminton was on display and our students did not disappoint. All our U11 doubles teams medalled along with Tonkaw in the singles, and Kenji winning his age category. This resulted in Denla coming second place overall. All our JV teams and singles tried extremely hard, narrowly missing out on semi final places, apart from Minnie and Pinky who were just beaten in their Semi Final. A great effort was displayed by all, well done!
The set and design team have been hard at work painting the backgrounds and making the props for Bugsy Malone. Students from Y4-Y8 first created the designs and are now transferring them onto the screens for painting. They have also began work creating the many custard pies! Tickets for Bugsy Malone will be available from Monday 24th June, and there will be three performances on Wednesday 3rd, Thursday 4th and Friday 5th July at 5.30pm.

We are delighted to introduce the DBS Summer School 'A Global Adventure' opening for Pre-EY1 to Y8, from 22nd July to 16th August 2019. For more information please click on the link below:
