May News

from Catherine Chambers Physiotherapy and Pilates
As winter gets closer and the temperature changes, it can result in the unwanted sniffle and sneeze. We call this time of year "chest season" as people struggle with colds and influenza, or other chest infections. To ease some of your discomfort and aid in your recovery, we offer 'chest physio' - this includes things like postural drainage, nebulisation and breathing exercises to loosen and eliminate unwanted mucous. We are here if you need us!
Have a look at the ginger, lemon & honey tea recipe, at the bottom of our Newsletter, to ward off those sore/scratchy throats.
Wishing all our mum's a Happy belated Mother's Day!
You can buy vouchers, here at the practice, if you'd like to treat your mum to a Physio, massage or individual Pilates session - valid for 3 months, from date of purchase.

Mindfulness in May

Mindfulness is a tool that evidence-based physiotherapy is now using to assist patients in managing their pain. This is particularly useful with persistent or chronic pain as it allows you to find space in your life, where the focus is not on pain or on altered ability due to pain or injury.  Mindfulness itself is not spiritual or religious in any way, but takes the time to focus on the present using breathing, body scan, sensory techniques or mindful movement (like yoga, Pilates or Thai Chi for example) to alter ones focus. There is a lot of promising research that suggests even short term use of mindfulness as a tool can alter your neurophysiology to help manage stress, pain and improve your quality of life.

Through regular practice of mindfulness (it is suggested we continue with daily practice) we can improve our neurological, hormonal and general physiological balance and allow for a decreased conscious perception of threat in the form of stress or pain. It is therefore an integral tool to shifting most treatment to recovery. Our goal is to use mindfulness as a tool to help improve stress management, body-mind relationship, movement with awareness and ultimately an increase in function.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask!

What have our clients been up to?
Congratulations to Alex & Susanne Schubert and to Megan Beckett - they completed the Two Oceans Marathon. Well done to you all!
Doug Shobert is back in America and has continued his hiking journey.
He recently ventured up "The Priest", the first Appalachian Trail mountain over 4000 feet!
Apparently if you stay in the shelter there, you are supposed to write a confession in the trail log book!

Ginger, lemon & honey tea

Everyone knows a good ginger, lemon & honey tea can do wonders, but do they know why? The anti-inflammatory gingerols and shaogals in ginger root will help to relieve a sore throat quickly, and they kill rhinoviruses (which cause colds in the first place). Ginger also has both antiviral and anti-nausea properties. The Vitamin C in lemon prevents the onset of colds and shortens the duration of a cold. Honey soothes a sore throat, making it an effective and natural cough suppressant.

Ingredients:
  • 1 lemon
  • Piece fresh ginger
  • Raw honey
Pop the ingredients above into some hot water, let it sit for a few minutes and enjoy!
