Mobile Phone Abstract Photography

Jeff Johnson

Master Photographer | Artist | Educator | Chief Instigator

You read it right! We are going to create some very unique and very fun abstract photographs with our mobile phones. This is a huge step away from reality and a big challenge to your creativity as we take everything we know about traditional photography and leave it in the car as we wander through the Plaza Mariachi. Using the décor, colors and flair of the Plaza we will be swirling, weaving, and waving our phones in midair as we create abstract art images (called Intentional Camera Movement (ICM)).
Really! I know this sounds . . . ok, weird, but it is so much fun as you will see.

First, I will show you how it is done. I will then share with you the many techniques and ideas I have come up with to create different and unique images. Then, I will share with you how I edit and enhance these stunning creations in Snapseed (free from the APP Store) for the phone & tablet and in Lightroom and Photoshop on the computer. All you need is to bring is your phone, fully charged, and a very open mind. We are going to have a lot of laughs and “ah-ha” moments as you challenge your creativity and each other.

If you have an iPhone, go to the APP Store and download Slow Shutter. It is $1.99. I’ll show you how we work it for best and easiest results! Android, Google and other phones have manual camera settings already built in. I will show you to best use these for this fun style of photography. If for some reason you cannot find an app to work, please feel free to bring your DSLR with a mid-range lens and I will show you this technique as well.

Bring your cell phone!

Please note there is a fee for this event.

As I write this, I am sitting at my daughter’s house in Dallas under a tornado watch.  My granddaughter just spent the last 30 minutes in the back of a Walmart while her county was under a tornado warning.  The unpredictable Spring weather is striking again and again!!

This week I am attending Texas School.  It is an educational opportunity that is presented by the Texas PPA affiliate.  I am one of almost 1,000 students seeking to take part in this wonderful educational opportunity.  I am in Jim Cunningham’s class and learning more and more about Corel Painter.  I already knew two of the 12 students from other workshops and seminars.  If you are not familiar with Texas School, you should look it up.  It is always held this time of year, and for the past 15+ years the location has been in Dallas. It is a great value for your money.  Check it out for next year.  The classes vary from Drones to Newborns with everything in between.

I would like to thank those of you that attended our headshot workshop at Misty and Bruce Westebbe’s outdoor studio. We had such a wonderful time and Marisa was such a patient and gifted instructor.  Each of us walked away with a new headshot.  I am still looking for images from most of the attendees.  Our models have been anxiously awaiting them.  If you did not receive an email from me with the Dropbox link, please let me know.  If it is easier to put them on a thumbdrive, then just bring that to our next meeting.  I would like to wrap this up in the next few weeks.

Our May meeting is going to be just as much fun!  Jeff has planned an abstract workshop for us at 11 AM on 5/14.  We will have an instruction period, take our photographs, and then Jeff will discuss his thoughts on processing. He will continue that evening at our 6PM meeting.  I know that you are going to really enjoy learning from and listening to Jeff.  I was fortunate enough to meet him when I went to the New Mexico PPA convention.  You are in for a big treat!!

I hope to see you soon!
