in November of 2018. He returns with “Process Theology Part II: Getting Unstuck”.
He will walk us through how the introduction of novelty into any system

CO-PRESIDENT's MESSAGE
THE NEED FOR A LONG RANGE PLAN We can all be very proud of the accomplishments we made in Fiscal Year 2018/2019. Let’s pat ourselves on the back because we achieved two important goals – we paid off the church mortgage and we raised enough funds for a wheelchair accessible bathroom. Both were easily recognizable things that had to be done and done ASAP. So a BIG HURRAH for us! Working together we did it!
So what’s to be accomplished next? And what’s next after that? What do we plan to accomplish as a church in the next five years? Certainly we were initially encumbered by our lack of funds to do Long Range Planning, but with increased contributions and successful fundraising, this becomes less and less a crutch we can cling to. As we flourish there is a greater need to provide our church with direction.
The Church Board verbally identified the next goal is kitchen plumbing improvements. After that I’ve heard a vague wish list of things needing to be done including new carpets, replacement windows, a hot water heater, interior paint, new walkways, a nicer kitchen, a children’s rooms, improved library, etc. I’ve heard mentions, needs, wants, dreams, and realities, but no serious discussion, no prioritization, no identification of resources, no ideas for funding nor budgeting. I’ve heard nothing serious about having a committee work to identify and target specific goals and come up with a plan.
Without a Long Range Plan we lack defined direction which is counterproductive. Without a Long Range Plan we will waste time with impromptu debates about which aspirations should have priority. These debates will lead to dissension, division and hard feelings among the congregation. This divides rather than unites us. With a Long Range Plan devised through a committee, approved by the membership, committed to by the congregation, we will be united behind goals that will make this church survive, endure, and be successful. To have a Long Range Plan we first need volunteers on a committee. Will you help?

This is Not Goodbye
This is the last time I'll write a column as Co President. It has been an invigorating year, full of successes, but also some frustrations. As always, we need more volunteers to help take us into the communities of SE Volusia. However, with a core, but fierce group of people, we have accomplished what I'd consider to be not a few miracles. Paying off our mortgage was a distant dream, but we did it! We've also raised enough money to convert one bathroom so it's accessible to all. We've contributed to several other UU churches through Chalice Lighter and one direct appeal from a former member. We gave out another scholarship and regularly sent funds to Halifax Urban Ministries. We've experimented with where to put our energies and money, in terms of events and advertising. It's been a learning experience, and will continue to be as we grow into our new home and reach out to our communities.
It's been an honor to be part of all this, and I thank you all for your good wishes and the countless hours spent working for our church. As I said, this is not goodbye; I will remain on the Board as a Trustee.

Fundraising Concert
KittyHawk
KittyHawk (formerly known as Rolling On) is different breed of musical cat. Each of the three band members, Charlie Poplees on guitar, banjo and keyboard, Marcia Buckingham on bass, mandolin and keyboard, and Guy Perry on electric and acoustic guitar, each bring something unique to the musical table. You may hear: classic rock; blues; oldies; country; originals and even a bit of bluegrass. No genre of music is safe from them!!! The KittyHawk members have long given up the thought of making a living or becoming “rock stars” in the music industry. They do it for the companionship and the joy of making music together. Come out on June 22 at 7 pm for a concert that will satisfy everyone's taste. Tickets can be purchased at church ahead of time, $12 per person, or at the door, $15 per person or $25 for two.

SCHOLARSHIP REPORT
We received 2 Applications for the Community Unitarian Universalist Church Dru Synal Memorial Scholarship this year. Our committee selected the Candidate we felt most reflected the reasons Dru had conceived of this Scholarship: Mackenzie Leigh Coleman. She'll be attending Daytona State College.
Debbi and Joe attended the Honors Night ceremony at New Smyrna Beach High School May 16th and were privileged to meet and speak with Mackenzie and her family (she lives with her proud grandparents, who've encouraged her plans for a bright future!) - a joyful evening! Both scholarship applicants received numerous scholarships, which impressed us - they've each received caring support from the high school as well as the 'Cudas UnHooked program, and we expect they'll thrive in college!
Everyday Miracles
I will make a confession: I LOVE $1 Stores. Recently I purchased a book for $1 entitled, "HOPE: A Memoir of Survival in Cleveland" by Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus - two of the three young women held captive in Ohio by a school bus driver named Ariel Castro. They and another woman, Michelle Knight, were kept in chains in a house with boarded up Windows for many years (about 9 for Gina, 10 for Amanda, & 11 for Michelle). During this time Amanda and Gina were each focus points in an exhaustive search by law enforcement officials; each girl was a teenager at the time of her kidnapping and neither fit the profile of a "runaway" - and their families made every effort possible to keep their names and faces in the media as days became weeks, months and years (Michelle Knight was not a minor at the time of her abduction and received little attention.) Amanda's mother Louwana would become ill and die never knowing what had happened to her. Though imprisoned, ill-treated, starved and kept as sex slaves, the girls were provided with TVs by their captor, so they saw their families onscreen pleading for their return. Amanda learned of her mother's death from the TV News. When she became pregnant, she thought, 'Maybe my mom sent me an angel to keep me company in this prison.' The baby, named Jocelyn, was born on Christmas morning 2006; Gina and Michelle delivered her. As years went by, the child's father would take her out in public - to parks and carnivals, even to church (she knew how to pray because Amanda taught her the ritual of Bedtime Prayers) - knowing he could pass her off as his "girlfriend's daughter" if anyone spoke to them. Amanda created a 'school' in the room she shared with her daughter, so Jocelyn could experience a small amount of 'normalcy' as she aged. Amanda switched from 'Mommy' to 'Teacher' every weekday to play this role, teaching Jocelyn with materials Castro brought home from the public schools. Though still a prisoner, Amanda now had a purpose: raising her daughter. It comforted her and Gina to know that their families had never given up hope that they were alive somewhere (Gina's mother, Nancy, said to her husband, Felix, "I had that Dream Again, about Gina. I SAW her. I KNOW that she's Alive!")
In May of 2013, realizing that her captor had left her room unlocked before leaving the house, Amanda broke through a locked storm door and shocked a world which had largely forgotten about her existence. The three captives (plus Jocelyn) were rescued and Ariel Castro was brought into custody. Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight are now heroic figures to me. They beat the odds and taught us all that hope shines a light into the darkest prisons. Death did not find them. Instead they encountered New Life!

It's official! We own our church building and to celebrate, we held a mortgage burning party. There was champagne and cake and some drumming. Here are some photos from that day.
Winner of the Raffle for the Rocking Chair
On Sunday, May 19th, the raffle ticket for the Rocking Chair was pulled and Joe Wolfarth is the happy winner. The raffle raised $186 for our church library project. Thank you to Michelle M. for her donation of the chair.

Margaret Sanger
1879-1966
Author, Birth Control Advocate
Margaret Higgins Sanger (born Margaret Louise Higgins, September 14, 1879 – September 6, 1966, also known as Margaret Sanger Slee) was an American birth control activist, sex educator, writer, and nurse. Sanger popularized the term "birth control", opened the first birth control clinic in the United States, and established organizations that evolved into the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
Sanger used her writings and speeches primarily to promote her way of thinking. She was prosecuted for her book Family Limitation under the Comstock Act in 1914. She was afraid of what would happen, so she fled to Britain until she knew it was safe to return to the US. Sanger's efforts contributed to several judicial cases that helped legalize contraception in the United States. Due to her connection with Planned Parenthood, Sanger is a frequent target of criticism by opponents of abortion. However, Sanger drew a sharp distinction between birth control and abortion and was opposed to abortion through the bulk of her career. Sanger remains an admired figure in the American reproductive rights movement.
