ELEMENTAL FIBER AT THE BNY MELLON SATELLITE GALLERY

Now through August 18 at Contemporary Craft's BNY Mellon Center Satellite Gallery, view works telling fabric narratives by artist Kathy Nida in Elemental Fiber.

Nida uses colorful quilts to explore public issues such as women's rights, politics, climate change, and gun control as well as other social topics through her art. The pieces are started using pen and paper and then turned into quilts using fabric, beads, embroidery paint and pen. The work is a part of Fiberart International 2019, celebrating artists from around the world who work in fiber, now on display in Contemporary Craft's main gallery.

The satellite gallery is located at 500 Grant Street in Downtown, in the lobby of the Steel Plaza T Station. The exhibit is free and open daily until midnight. More information can be found here.

Coneman Tip of the Week: OpenStreetsPGH returns!
Hosted by BikePGH, OpenStreetsPGH is a free community event featured in the summer that temporarily closes streets to car traffic and invites Pittsburghers, in the city and beyond, to reimagine their streets as places for people and not just cars. We are now less than a week away from this year’s first OpenStreetsPGH event taking place on Saturday, May 25, so get your active gear ready and break out your bikes, tricycles, scooters (non-electric only), roller skates, and best pair of sneakers to explore neighborhoods and businesses across Pittsburgh you may have never even visited.

Last year, there was an average of 38,000 people who attended each OpenStreetsPGH event and because of the overwhelming positive feedback about the routes, BikePGH has brought back all three routes this year! First up this Saturday will be the 4.4-mile loop which will explore five neighborhoods in Pittsburgh’s East End – Homewood, Larimer, East Liberty, Shadyside, and Point Breeze – and is also the longest OpenStreetsPGH route yet to date. In addition to exploring the loop via the active transportation mode of your choice, there will also be stations with fitness workshops, kids’ activities, shopping, brunch, community arts, and special promotions offered throughout the route.

If you aren’t planning to participate in OpenStreetsPGH, but know that you will be travelling by bus or car near the route, BikePGH has created a FAQ section on their ‘About’ page and a ‘Getting Here’ page with commonly asked questions on street closures to car traffic, how to cross the event routes by car, transit options to reach the route, and information outlining the parameters of no parking on the event route.
