June 1: Danone Institute North America: One Planet. One Health Initiative.
Teams win a $20,000 award
The One Planet. One Health Initiative is a new competitive program that will select and fund up to four transdisciplinary teams in 2019 to design, implement and evaluate actionable community-based projects on sustainable food systems. This initiative will provide seed funding for projects such as pilot studies, feasibility testing, needs assessments and planning grants. June 13: McDonnell Foundation 21st Century Postdoctoral Fellowship Award
$200,000
The JSMF Fellowship is a unique opportunity for students with an interest in and an aptitude for complexity science who are in the final stages of completing their Ph.D. and looking to make a significant change in direction for their first postdoctoral fellowship (field of study, model organism, theory vs experimental, etc.) that will either be difficult or impossible without an external source of funding. August 8: NIH Kirschstein Predoctoral Individual NRSA
Award amounts vary
The purpose of this Kirschstein-NRSA program is to enable promising predoctoral students with the potential to develop into productive, independent research scientists, to obtain mentored research training while conducting dissertation research. The F31 is also used to enhance workforce diversity though a separate program. More.


OPPORTUNITIES AT RICE


Say STEM Camps: Any discipline
Apply by May 31
There is an opportunity for funding for Rice graduate students of any discipline who are interested in being a Program Staffer (Chaperone) for the residential Tapia Center STEM summer camps for high students held on the Rice Campus. Program Staffers will receive $3300 plus free room and board for the time period July 7 - August 2 consisting of four week-long camps and one training week. Each staffer will be responsible for supervising 15 campers outside of the campers class time, and will act as resident advisors. No STEM knowledge is needed. More.

Say STEM Camps: STEM students
STEM Graduate students are invited to apply to be an instructor for four week-long STEM summer camps between July 7 – August 2. Instructors will earn $3300, will be mentored in teaching, and will gain valuable teaching/mentoring experience. All curriculum will be provided. The summer camp participants will be high school students. The program is looking for graduate students from all STEM disciplines. More.
Summer Bootcamps in Data Science
Apply by July 15, camp is August 12-16
Leading Data Science faculty serve as instructors for the Data Science Boot Camp at Rice University. The curriculum covers topics ranging from Python, Cloud Computing, Unsupervised and Supervised Learning to Deep Learning. Using Rice’s shared computing infrastructure, hands-on laboratory sessions supported by the instructor and lab assistants, will be offered each day allowing participants to practice what is being taught in the class sessions. P&G FIRST stands for Focusing on Industrial Recruitment of Scientific Talent. For the last 28 years, the conference has exposed, recruited, and employed top Ph.D. talent. The conference provides participants with a clear picture of the career opportunities, expectations, and challenges that exist in industrial research. The next FIRST annual conference will be held September 2019. The conference is doctoral and postdoctoral scientists who want to learn more about industrial research careers, but other qualified candidates, including foreign nationals, will be considered. Nine graduate students win Special Endowed Fellowships, funding
Nine Rice University graduate students have won Special Endowed Fellowships for 2019-2020! The selection process is highly competitive and by nomination only. “This year's crop of nominees from across graduate programs, as in years past, were impressive in their quality, as well as diversity — there were many outstanding candidates and tough choices to make by the Graduate Council," said Bernard Fields, alumni representative of the Graduate Council.
