International Collaboration Aims to Predict Life-Threatening Reaction to Heparin Treatment

Each year, as many as 12 million hospitalized patients – one-third of all individuals hospitalized – are prescribed the anticoagulant medication, heparin.

Of those patients, as many as 2.4 percent will develop heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, a condition that has a greater than 30 percent mortality rate and can result in catastrophic, life-threatening complications, including thrombosis.

“If we could determine patients who may be predisposed to the condition, we could enable clinicians to avoid heparin in at-risk patients, monitor patients at high-risk and prevent complications or death related to the condition,” said Jason Karnes, PharmD, PhD, Assistant Professor and leader on grant.

College Connects with Sahuarita Middle School Students

The UA College of Pharmacy had the privilege of attending a career fair at Sahuarita Middle School on Wednesday, May 8. The all-day event offered students from grades 6 to 8 the chance to learn about a variety of career paths, including news media, law enforcement, and pharmacy. Local news station KGUN9 covered the event for their Morning Blend segment.

COP Recruitment Specialist LuzMaría Hernández was in attendance, along with PGY1 pharmacy residents Andrea Laguado, PharmD, Blanca Guerra, PharmD and Banin Alqadheeb, PharmD.

As students came to the college’s table, they were able to ask questions about what pharmacists do, what it means to go to pharmacy school, and more. Hernández noted that 8th grade is a particularly critical time for student development. “As students enter high school, they have the opportunity to work with guidance counselors to help them on the path to success.”

Alumni Spotlight: Yvonne Ng, Class of 2019

Being a wildcat for eight years has meant a lot to me and I enjoyed the support I received from all the professors and the wildcat community. In the future, I hope to be able to share the same experiences I received to future wildcats. As a future pharmacist, I would like to become a preceptor to future students on rotations and during health fairs. One of the most memorable moments as a pharmacy student was being patient education co-chair and organizing health fairs.
