It's been far too long friends, since we've connected with you. And for that, we apologize. We also want to thank you for your patience and sticking with us.

We've had a few changes here at Simon House. Change is good! It keeps us fresh and inline with our core values of compassion, acceptance, respect, integrity, accountability and innovation.

Did you know that Simon House surveys our men upon intake to the 12-Week Residential Program, and upon completion of the program? These statistics are crucial for us to measure change and for long-term recovery success. From January 1 to April 30, 2019, of the men we surveyed, clients reported meaningful change in the following areas:
  • 93% improvement in stress management.
  • 84% improvement in conflict resolution.
  • 66% improvement in hopefulness / positivity about the future.
  • 90% improvement in anger / frustration management.
  • 92% improvement in self-esteem / self-confidence.
  • 59% improvement in the importance of spirituality.
  • 47% improvement in ability to maintain their sobriety.
  • 98% report having a health support system upon completion.
  • 98% report having the necessary tools to decrease their risk to re-offend.
  • 84% of clients were housed in Simon House Transitional Housing.
  • On average, Simon House returned 16 men back to work each month!

Financially, we finished 2018 $5,000.00 in the black! This was mainly due to increasing our revenue by $189,022.00 through increasing and collecting “Program Fees” for attending our 12 week program. We also continued to receive great financial support from individual, corporate, club, and foundation donations to Simon House. Such as the Rotary Club of Calgary, and the Calgary Foundation. Finally, we held another successful “Friends of Simon House” fund raising dinner in June of 2018.

In regards to our physical facilities, 2018 was a very active year for Simon House. Due to extreme weather conditions, we were forced to make multiple insurance claims to repair multiple buildings in our portfolio. These repairs included replacing the entire hot water system in our main building.

Our program performance in 2018 was down a bit to 214 from our usual annual average of 250 admissions. This was due to losing 8 beds for almost 6 months due to ice damning which caused water to leak through a roof and cause great damage in one half of one of duplexes. (Yes, this was one of our major insurance claims of 2018)

Of the 214 men admitted to our 12 week program, 119 men successfully completed and graduated. This is a 12 week program completion rate of 56% for 2018. We also celebrated 42 to Alumni who achieved one year of continuous sobriety in 2018.

It's that time of year again! We are excited to be hosting our 4th Annual Friends of Simon House Dinner Gala on Friday, June 21, 2019! This is our biggest fund raising event of the year and will be hosted again at The Winston Golf and Country Club.

For the past three years, we have been able to secure 3 matching donor families. We are happy to report, that this year is no different! The same three families who have generously supported Simon House in the past, are doing so again this year.

Our very own, Carrie Jean Ling, who has been a member of 100 Women Who Care Calgary since May 2016, has been nominating Simon House for a donation since February 2017. Here persistence paid off!

On Tuesday, May 7, 2018, her name was called. She spoke to the members about Simon House, our founders and their vision for Simon House, the work we do, the men and their families we serve, and the amazing community we're part of in Bowness.

The members voted, and Simon House was chosen to receive a donation of $20,000+! More updates to come on the final dollar amount in our Summer 2019 newsletter, stay tuned!
