"Setting boundaries is an extension of self-care." — Lalah Delia

Morning Musings

Recently, I received some news that had me all in my feelings. Typically in this sort of scenario, I jump right back into work, whether it be at my day job or this here blog. But this time I decided to fight my instincts and sit in my sadness.

As I mentioned last week, work is kind of my drug. It's also a numbing agent for when I don't want to feel.

The Monday after my grandfather passed away on a Friday night, I was back at work. Another Black person gunned down by police? Log off Twitter and go back to work. Work work work work work. It's a distraction and my salve.

But yesterday, I just sat. Thinking, processing and feeling for about 15 minutes. And then I went for a walk to get some fresh air. And then I told my manager I'd be taking a Mental Health Day on Wednesday (and she was super supportive ... thank you, Monique!).

To be clear, I should have probably taken a Mental Health Day a while ago because the stress of work and travel has started to take its toll (y'all, I tried to brush my teeth with acne cream the other day, okay? That's how my week is going).

And it's either be proactive and take a self-care day, or get so worn down that I catch a cold and have to take a sick day. I chose the former (and to learn how you can do the same, check out this post from Shine Text).

Thanks to an impromptu cupcake date with a coworker friend (hi, Chloe!) and weeknight dinner with my besties, I'm already feeling better.

And today, you can find me on my sofa binge-watching RHOA, catching up on my magazine reading and researching Instaworthy houseplants on Pinterest (if you have recommendations, please send. Note: I do NOT have a green thumb, so the less maintenance, the better).

Humans are basically houseplants with more complicated emotions. So today, I'm watering myself and basking in the sunlight. I encourage you to do the same.

Love,
L'Oreal

My Latest Obsession

I'm not entirely sure where or when I first discovered the awesomeness that is Brené Brown, but it's safe to say I'm pretty obsessed with the bestselling author and shame researcher. (No, I haven't watched her special yet, but it's on my list!)

Recently I finished her latest book, Dare to Lead, and it has me reflecting on my own approach to leadership and interactions with colleagues. I may not be a manager yet, but I definitely consider myself a leader and if you do, too (or aspire to be), than this book is for you.
