Duke Energy gives to science fair

Duke donationSouthern Wesleyan University recently received a $2,500 gift recently from Duke Energy to benefit the Southern Wesleyan University Regional Science Fair. At left is University President Dr. Todd Voss accepting the check from Catherine Heigel, president of Duke Energy South Carolina. Also pictured is Mike Wilson, Duke Energy’s district manager for Anderson, Oconee, Pickens and Abbeville counties; and Rev. James Wiggins, Southern Wesleyan vice president for development. Duke has played an ongoing role in the Science Fair, partnering with Southern Wesleyan’s Science Division by providing financial support and involving its employees as volunteers.


SWU Athletics Serving in the Community
The SWU athletic department has received the NAIA's Champions of Character award for the past several years.  This award is given to NAIA schools across the country that meet certain standards set forth by the National Office. Read More >>


Thompson named Teacher of the Year
Audrey Thompson, a master of education student in the AGS program at Greenwood, was named Teacher of the Year for Greenwood District 51. She teaches fifth-grade science, social studies and English and Language Arts at Ware Shoals Elementary School. She also earned her bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Lander University in 2006.


“Run to the Darkness” – theme for Missions Conference at SWU
Southern Wesleyan University’s missions conference is this week.  The speaker for the conference is Caleb Bislow of Kingdom Building Ministries. Bislow recently returned from a dark and remote area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Bislow has spoken in missions conferences at churches and universities throughout the U.S. Also, eight mission organizations will be on campus providing students with various opportunities for mission work, both short term and long term. Here is the schedule:

  • Monday, Oct. 17 - Chapel- 10:50 a.m.
    - Missions Challenge - 8 p.m. at Founders' Hall
  • Tuesday, Oct. 18 - Chapel - 10:50 a.m.
    - Missions Opportunities - 9 p.m. at  FWC Fellowship Hall
  • Thursday, Oct. 19 - 10:50 a.m.

Experience London during spring break, Feb. 23 – March 5. Tour highlights include Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Windsor Castle and other iconic landmarks.

Wizard of Oz Auditions
Auditions will be taking place Oct. 28 for “Wizard of Oz.” The auditions are open to any interested students. Also, if you are a faculty member with a child at least five years old and under 4’10”, Dr. Melanie Rowell is looking for munchkins. Read more >>

Shoes for Steve
Did you know that one in 50 children face homelessness at some pointshoes in their lives? In the Upstate, 40 percent of homeless males have served in the military. Donations of shoes are being accepted now through Dec. 1 for the Fourth Annual Shoes for Steve drive. Items being collected include new or gently used men’s or women’s shoes (athletic or work boot) and kids shoes, including any winter shoes. Please leave your donations at the Student Accounts Office.


SWUFestToo
Southern Wesleyan University’s Music Department will host the second annual SWUFestToo, a festival featuring choirs from five Upstate schools, totaling over 230 students. Read more>>
