Planned Improv: All About Angles Workshop

I spent last Saturday with Bay Area Modern Quilting for a day of workshop fun. I shared my basic rules for my All About Angles technique and the quilters ran with it! The above project is made by Mary C. with a Tara Faughnan color palette. I look forward to teaching All About Angles next in Yuba City in August. (See my upcoming schedule below and my full teaching school on my blog.)

Palettes featuring Kiwi

My daughter helped me with this issue's color palettes. So these are through the eyes of a very-nearly-7-year-old. She chose that the palettes would have seven colors each since she turns seven tomorrow, she picked the kiwi green in the centers to build the palettes around since green is her favorite color, and then she chose the rest of the colors for each palette. I gently guided her to not make all the palettes bright (which is my tendency as well) since some people like less vibrant palettes. I think she did pretty well, but remember that you could use part of one of these palettes for a project or as a stepping off point to build your own unique palette. Kona colors are used for reference (and listed clockwise from top with Kiwi in the center), but you can always use blenders and prints as well. Enjoy!
(1) Kiwi, Blue Jay, Breakers, Blueberry, Candy Green, Cactus, Bluegrass.
(2) Kiwi, Duckling, Earth, Emerald, Grellow, Herb, Honey.
(3) Kiwi, Honey Dew, Aloe, Asparagus, Dusty Blue, Haze, Green Tea.
(4) Kiwi, Bright Idea, Bright Pink, Cadet, Candy Green, Carrot, Bright Peri.

Modern Traditional

Our March Island Batik Ambassador challenge was Vintage Reimagined. I chose the Antique Tile quilt block for my starting point for my modern traditional quilt, finished with a combination of walking foot and free motion quilting.

Last month my Island Batik project featured cool colored scraps and this month I've opted use my warm scraps for some improv piecing (pic above). But all sewing is currently on hold while I work on getting the studio in order!

At the end of April I solidified my new organizational plan for my studio. I purchased four PAX wardrobes from Ikea with a variety of drawers and shelves. Most will have doors and one will be an open bookshelf, at least for the time being. Three of the cabinets are built and two of them are bolted in place. This means I can start loading them up with thread and fabric and batting in my quest for some semblance of organization. ;-) I'll spare you the honest craftroom picture of the space. Just imagine all the things on the floor. My design walls have been temporarily exiled to the hallway...

But last night my son and I actually managed to sew a bit. (We just pushed some piles of fabric out of the way first.) He needed a project to accompany his research paper on Morocco, so I suggested he make a flag. (Really this was counter to his idea to draw a flag, because I have no idea where markers or crayons are and the project was due this morning.) Luckily Morocco's flag has a pretty simple design. He had me cut 1/4" strips of green which he arranged in a star in the middle of the red rectangle and then he stitched them in place. Raw edge, super fast, done!

The project list is long for the next month, and I already know something's gonna have to give. The three things I'd like to finish in May are my Trinket quilt top, the May Island Batik project, and the Riley Blake challenge (which I have fabric for, but no plan yet). What are you working on this month?

Happy Quilting!
