For some people it’s normal to ‘give thanks’ before eating a meal, for many others it’s both abnormal and weird.

Prayers of thankfulness for food, which are frequently ritualistic and formalised, often seem pointlessly religious. And in that case, why bother?

But perhaps there is some subtle wisdom hidden there, even for the very least religious of us, in the repeated words of humble gratitude for something to eat. Because we take these things too much for granted, very often. We could all learn to be more grateful for what we have, and perhaps a repeated prayer can help with that.
