Dear Friend of Senate District 10,

I hope you had a great week thus far. I would like to personally take a moment to thank all of those who reached out to both myself and my office concerning the fire on the farm this past Sunday. As a farmer, my family and I have had setbacks before and we’ve overcome them and I’m very positive and faithful that we’ll be able to do this as well. Thank you to all of the local firefighters that worked to control and put out the flames. I am looking forward to continuing to work here in Raleigh as my colleagues and I work to complete the budget process here in the Senate.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if I can assist you in any way possible.

Sincerely,

Sampson Trucking Program Number One in the State

According to reports released by the North Carolina Community College System, Sampson Community College’s Truck Driver Training Program is number one in the state regarding the number of FTEs, full-time hours taken by students.

Sampson’s Truck Driver Training Program is among 24 other programs across the state at other community colleges.

The SCC program is a 350-hour course that provides students with training to assure driver responsibilities on and off the road. Program instructors say students are thoroughly trained both on the road and in the curriculum to ensure they posses the skills and knowledge to safely operate a commercial vehicle.

The program, started in 2006 with support from Golden LEAF and local businesses, trains class A and class B drivers that are critical to the regional economy. At the end of last year, the program and school received a Cannon Foundation grant of $100,000 to be used to help fund the construction of a training site in the Sampson County Industrial Park on property that was donated by the Clinton 100 Committee.

While enrolled in the program, students are taught federal motor carrier regulations, vehicle inspections, general operations and maintenance, on the road driving, defensive driving, map reading, trip planning, cargo handling, size and weight restrictions, hours of service rules and accident prevention and distracted driving.

District Spotlight

Clinton native Rogers headed to R&B Hall of Fame

In June, Rogers will be honored during the eighth annual ceremony for the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame, becoming the first to receive The Tom Joyner Radio Personality of the Year Award.

Founded in 2010, the R&B Hall of Fame has inducted more than 200 renowned R&B legends. Some of the inductees this year include Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, H-Town, Guy and Henry Cosby. Rogers is proud to be a part of the ceremony and receiving a special award named after Joyner, a popular nationally syndicated radio show host heard in many cities across the United States.

After graduating from Clinton High School in the early 1980s, Rogers attended the University of the District of Columbia and later began working in the promotional world of boxing. It led to a career in public relations and the music industry.

He worked with legends such as The Manhattans, The Whispers, The O’Jays, Gladys Knight, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly and members of The Temptations. A close relationship was also formed with Joe Jackson, patriarch of the Jackson Family and former manager of The Jackson 5. During his career, Rogers also spent time with comedians such as Steve Harvey and Tommy Davidson.
