North Kelvin Community Council News

May 2019

Hello and welcome to our May 2019 newsletter!

We have plans for a community clean-up of Yarrow Gardens Lane this Saturday (18th), 10.30am to 12.30pm. Please come along if you can, even if you can only manage a short time. We will provide equipment, but we're a bit short of shovels so please bring your own if you have one. We will provide gloves but again if you have your own, please bring them as they might be more robust!

Schools: re the proposed new primary school, at our April meeting, following a presentation and lengthy discussion, we voted unanimously to support the planning application with one major caveat – that the traffic and safety issues were fully reviewed and addressed. Our detailed response is available on our website. NB the closing date for comments to the City Council has been extended to Monday 27 May 2019.

Re the consultation in relation to the entrance criteria for Notre Dame High School, at our May meeting, again following discussion with members of the community present, we unanimously supported the position to change the school to co-ed (option 3 in the consultation) with two important additions: (i) that St Charles Primary School should be included in the catchment, and (ii) that St Charles Primary should have split option catchments for both Notre Dame High School and also John Paul Academy. There is an online survey and the consultation closing date is Sunday 26 May 2019.
Looking ahead:
  • our next meeting (& last one before the summer break) is on Tuesday 4 June (6.30pm, St Charles’ Church Hall, 1 Kelvinside Gardens)
  • a public exhibition as part of the long-awaited parking consultation is expected in mid June (watch this space)
  • the new Woodside health centre is expected to open at the beginning of July
The West End Festival gets under way at the end of May. As usual there's loads to do in and around North Kelvin, and on Sunday 23 June from 11am Queen Margaret Drive will be the venue for the Great Street Play and the Big Get-Together. We look forward to part of the road being closed to traffic for a few hours in the great cause of fun!
From local to global: the City Council's Climate Emergency Working Group is looking at how Glasgow should respond to the urgent need to reduce global carbon emissions and prevent major climate change. Please respond to the climate consultation survey with your suggestions.
