I'm sure you've noticed that the Bible has a lot to say about money. As a Christian you are called to be a wise steward of all that God has given you. That means giving generously, saving wisely, spending intelligently and giving generously (I mentioned that twice on purpose). Consider the following verses: Proverbs 30:8-9, Malachi 3:8-10, Luke 16:13-15, Matthew 6:31-33, Matthew 6:19-21, 1 Timothy 6:10, Hebrews 13:5.
You've probably also heard statistics that say something like this: money worries usually top the list of reasons for couples splitting up.
These two points are enough of a reminder to us that we should work hard at maintaining a healthy and biblical financial system in our homes. Here are some suggestions for a discussion with your spouse:
- Read the above verses together and ask: How would our marriage look if we applied these principles? How would it look if we ignored these principles? How can we honour God with our finances as a couple?
- Write down and discuss your financial goals. Start with 3 short term and 3 long term. Compare your lists and work out which ones are worth pursuing together and how you can pursue them.
- Create a budget based on your goals, income and Biblical wisdom.
Financial differences were a huge issue for Jacqui and me when we first married. Following the above 3 steps and making an effort to communicate well about finances revolutionised our marriage.
At NBC we take this seriously. You would have heard that we are hosting a free 3 week CAP Money Course. This will equip you with Biblical and proven tools to enable you to manage your finances well.
We'd love to see you there. And please spread the word! This is a great way to engage our local community.
Peace...
