May is known by many MHM advocates as the flow month. The month when we celebrate the World Menstruation Day, May 28th.
This year, as has been the norm, we are joining fellow girls rights advocates in Uganda to create a world in which every woman and girl is empowered to manage her menstruation safely, hygienically, with confidence and without shame, where no woman or girl is limited by something as natural and normal as her period.
Poor menstrual hygiene caused by a lack of education on the issue, persisting taboos and stigma, limited access to hygienic menstrual products and poor sanitation infrastructure undermines the educational opportunities, health and overall social status of women and girls in Uganda. As a result, girls are kept from realizing full potential.
Through our signature campaign, Books Before Babies, we have been conducting school and community outreaches to interact with school girls, boys and teacher and community leaders on what we can do better to break the silence, raise awareness and change negative social norms surrounding MHM in our schools.
From our discussions, we have compiled podcasts; with voices of young people and teachers sharing their experiences about Menstruation Hygiene and Management. Check out our sound cloud channel here, listen in to to the podcasts and feel free to share your feedback with us on this email
On the 28th of May, we shall join our partners Ministry of Education and Sports for the annual MHM National Symposium and as part of the day's program, we shall be unveiling a photo/visual exhibition with MHM stories of school girls, teachers, boys and policy makers sharing their experience on promotion of menstruation with dignity.
