IPBES Global Assessment

This month IPBES released the summary of their landmark global assessment report on biodiversity and ecosystem services. The ducument compiled over the past three years reports on a dangerous decline of nature and unprecedented loss of species, and calls for transformative changes needed to restore and protect nature. Read more.

The release of these findings was widely reported across popular media outlets and helped spark conversations on the importance of ecosystems, the threats they face and the ways forward. One example is the panel of experts discussing "Can nature be saved?" on the BBC program The Real Story. The panel included IPBES report co-author Unai Pascual and ESP executive committee member Benjamin Burkhard, among others. Listen to the full program here.

News from our Working Groups

BWG 5 – Mediterranean systems

New paper: Improving ecosystem assessments in Mediterranean socio-ecological systems.
Members of the ESP Mediterranean working group have just published an article in Ecosystems and People. The paper presents a Driver-Pressure-State-Impact-Response (DPSIR) methodology that seeks to provide guidance for better ecosystem assessments encompassing the Mediterranean region. Read more.

BWG 8 –  Polar regions & High mountains

New paper: A transnational perspective of global and regional ecosystem service flows from and to mountain regions.
The spatial relationships of ecosystem services are complex and poorly understood due to spatial mismatches between areas of provision and the areas that benefit. In this study, we assess the spatial flows of six key ecosystem services from and to mountain regions at the regional and global level. Read more.

TWG 10 – ES in Trade-off analysis & Project evaluation

Does modelling trade-offs gives the full picture, or can stakeholders tell it all? The complementarity of models and participative methods.
At the ESP 10 World conference in Hannover we are organizing a session on the complementarity of different methods (modelling/social/economic) to assess trade-offs and their impact on decision making. We welcome abstracts that either combine models and participatory trade-off research, or abstracts that focus on one approach (e.g. models) and reflect upon shortcomings that can be addressed by another method (e.g. social research) or vice versa. Please send your abstract for session T10

TWG 17– ES Accounting & Greening the economy

This latest technical report published by The Knowledge Innovation Project on an Integrated system of Natural Capital and ecosystem services Accounting (KIP INCA) with JRC, assesses and accounts for four ecosystem services (ES): crop provision, timber provision, global climate regulation, and flood control. Read more.

  • YESS has a new blog Nature Words. You can already find the first contributions directly from our YESS Delegation at IPBES7!
  • YESS is very happy that about a third of the sessions during ESP10 will be (co)-hosted by YESSers! In particular check out Session G7a - YESS: placing early career research on the ecosystem services landscape
  • We are also planning a pre-conference workshop for ESP10 targeted at Early Career Researchers, focusing on the topics of networking, science communication and scientific publishing (ethics, open-access, reviewing papers). More info coming soon!
  • YESS is a partner in a series of webinars on science diplomacy organized by the Environmental Peacebuilding Association and Future Earth Partners
