New to Our Library

librarySeveral books are being donated to our library:

The Hole in my Story, by Enid Miller Schloneger (mother of Mark Schloneger). Born with a cleft palate and unable to speak clearly, the author shares the emotional anguish of being taunted and rejected as a child and how those wounds can linger well after physical ones have healed. In the midst of her struggles, she finds refuge on her family farm in Smithville, Ohio, and is offered solace by caring teachers, compassionate church members, loyal friends, a loving family and a living faith. As an adult, she experiences healing and fulfillment through her roles as a wife, mother, nurse, pastor and hospice chaplain.

Gray Matter, by David Levy, M.D. who decided to ask his patients whether he could pray with them prior to surgery but had no idea what to expect. While some patients found comfort in Levy's request, others were skeptical or even downright hostile. But in the end, everyone--even the good doctor himself--was transformed by the experience.

Home to Holly Springs, by Jan Karon. Thirty-eight years have passed since Father Tim Kavanagh left his Mississippi hometown, determined not to return. Then he receives a handwritten note postmarked Holly Springs. Cryptic and unsigned, it says only, "Come Home." These two words compel him to make the most disturbing journey of his life. They also lead him to a truth that will change his life--forever.

Can a Secret Be Kept Forever?, by Colleen Coble.  Five years ago, Shannon Astor left the beautiful high-mountain country of West Texas as a single mother. She was desperate for a fresh start...and a way to keep the secrets of her past buried. It almost worked.

Rejoice, by Karen Kingsbury and Gary Smalley. A story of unspeakable loss and the overwhelming miracle of new life.

Forgiven, by Karen Kingsbury. A story of God's divine leading and the realization that peace comes only after forgiveness.

Take Two, by Karen Kingsbury. A desperate temptation, a driven determination, an undying dream.

Going through a Difficult Time?

handsIn the comforting Psalm 23 it says, "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me;” Berkey’s Stephen Ministry is one way God provides that support. If you or someone you know is struggling with the loss of a loved one or friend, loneliness, a spiritual crisis, recuperation, relocation, or any of countless other life challenges, contact one of our Stephen Leaders (Peter Shetler, Clare Krabill, or Laura Moshier) about Berkey’s Stephen Ministry, or send an email to their shared email address. Our Stephen Ministers are ready to provide focused, confidential, one-to-one Christian care—to help that person experience the healing power of Christ’s love.

Mennonite Creation Care

In column based on tips by Carole Suderman, Boulder Mennonite Church, Boulder, Colorado, Carole has been offering her congregations challenges like these for the past 20 years:
Are dandelions popping up in your yard? Those yellow flowers are more than just "flags" alerting us to dandelion locations so we can dig them out. Dandelions are often the first and most prolific source of food for bees and other essential pollinators. Meanwhile, you can eat the leaves, which are high in vitamins and iron.

Getting to Know

Steve & Allen

Steve & Allen Garboden

Steve is the youngest, and Allen the middle of three brothers born to a farm family in 1952. Steve lived in the same house, on a poultry/dairy farm in Linn Grove, Indiana until he left for Goshen College in 1970.  Allen stayed on the farm, in a new house, until 1990, when he moved to Goshen with their mother, Celeste. Their father, James, died in 1980.  Both brothers have fond memories of the farm, although their memories often contradict each other and cause minor squabbles. (We never ask questions about which dog was hit by the milk truck, or which relative crashed a plane in their field! Just for fun, try asking Allen which brother worked the hardest!)

Steve didn't like farming and starting planning his escape early in life by looking for a different career. On the farm, he was in charge of 3,000 laying hens. Allen helped with 40 cows. Both boys started driving a tractor before starting school.

Big Brothers James and Allen wouldn't play ball with Steve, so he taught himself to juggle by using eggs. Both brothers enjoyed time with a large extended family. Allen spent many happy days and weeks with their uncle Darrol, who lived on a golf course. After spending a morning collecting lost golf balls, they would go home to count and wash them before packing them in egg cartons to sell.

Allen loved spending time at the Linn Grove Elevator, bantering with the other farmers.

The  family was active in the First Mennonite Church in Berne IN , where Summer Bible School lasted for FIVE WEEKS!

Steve  always enjoyed math, and majored in it at Goshen College. A very brief (not brief enough!) job as a junior high math teacher convinced him that teaching was not for him. After two years of VS as a bookkeeper  in Clintwood Virginia, a providential encounter with an old high school friend led him to a job at MMA/Everence, where he stayed for 32 rich and rewarding  years. His interest in Health Insurance led him  to a great job at Goshen Health, where he stayed from 2008-the present. Although officially retired, he works two mornings a week at Goshen Health.

Allen works three days a week at ADEC Industries. He first started work there 30 years ago. He enjoys living at Greencroft, where he can visit with neighbors in the lounge and at meals.

Steve has always been a Detroit Tigers fan, and continues to follow them and attend a few games each year. He took a solo trip to Florida last spring for a week of Tigers Spring Training. A retirement gift in 2018 gave him several Tigers tickets, so last summer was a Tigers marathon. He also enjoys college football and basketball. He also enjoys cooking with his grandson, Elijah. He likes to visit  Andrew's family, to  help with projects on their 150 - year old house and to watch the 6 and 7 year old grandsons play football and cricket.

Both Steve and Allen are thankful for their church family and the important role it fills in their lives.

LoriLori Good had cryosurgery to repair a tear in the retina of her left eye. The ophthalmologist is hopeful that there was only one tear but it was hard to tell because of the blood in the eye.  Lori has another appointment next Friday when he will check. Her vision in that eye will not return until all the blood clears out of the eye. Thank you for your prayers.

DebDeb Detwiler's children write, "To Deb's Berkey family,
We want to thank you for your love and support over the past weeks and months.  So many of you reached out with meals, flowers, cards, and prayers, and we deeply appreciate your help with making the visitation and memorial service a beautiful tribute to her life.  Berkey was such a special place for her.
With love, Andy, Ali, and Ian"
