Issei Suda: A Personal Retrospective

会期 Dates: 2019.5.24 ── 6.15

Zen Foto Gallery is pleased to announce a memorial exhibition for Issei Suda from May 24 to June 17 under the title “Issei Suda: A Personal Retrospective”. Last year, we published Suda’s photobook “The Mechanical Retina on My Fingertips” and were planning to exhibit the series during this period. We were extremely sad to learn about his passing earlier this year on March 7. Hoping to express our gratitude to Suda for kindly collaborating with us throughout these years, we will be showing a selection of his works including “The Mechanical Retina on My Fingertips”, “Kamagasaki”, “Waga Tokyo 100”, and “The Journey to Osorezan” which we have published as photobooks, as well as “Fushi Kaden”, “Tenjo Sajiki”, “Album”, “Ukigumo” and “CUT” which are a part of our gallery owner Mark Pearson’s personal collection and are rare to be seen. It is our greatest wish for everyone including ourselves to reflect and refresh our memories towards the multifaceted accomplishments by Suda, one of the most important Japanese photographers.

Issei Suda|Born in Tokyo in 1940, Suda graduated from the Tokyo College of Photography. From 1967 to 1970 he worked as the photographer of the theatrical group Tenjō Sajiki directed by poet-playwright Shūji Terayama. In 1997, Suda received the Ken Domon Award with his photobook “Human Memory”. Apart from running Hiranagachobashi Gallery independently in the 1990s, Suda spent a lot of efforts in cultivating next-generation photographers by holding private seminars and teaching as a professor at Osaka University of Arts. Suda passed away on March 7th, 2019.

The Mechanical Retina on My Fingertips

(November 2018)
“The Mechanical Retina on My Fingertips” is how Suda named his Minox Camera that held him in thrall from 1991 to 1992. The Minox camera is popularly known as a spy camera - It fits in the pocket with a shutter release as light as the blink of an eye. The resulting images developed from 8x11mm negatives are grainy and have a flat perspective. Suda comments that “no other camera ever accompanied my activities so closely.”

東京景
Tokyokei

(2013)

The Tokyo of my youth has vanished, but still there are times when I feel joyously nostalgic, sensing the happiness at festivals in the shitamachi (“low city”) area, or observing the unconscious actions of passers-by. My image of my home town is actually the sight of the daily lives of the people who live here. As well as being a record of a certain period in Japanese history, this book is also my own private perspective on my home town and one that I want to hold in my heart forever. - Issei Suda

“Tokyokei” presents 106 previously unpublished photographs of the streets and people of Tokyo in the 1970s and 1980s. Published by Zen Foto Gallery in association with Nazraeli Press. Each copy of the book is numbered and signed by the artist.

The Journey to Osorezan

(2013)

The photos in the book are perhaps representative of the transformations Suda must have undergone when journeying to the mountain. While the first portion of the book predominantly features civilisatory scenes and people, sometimes smiling at the camera, the mood grows increasingly contemplative. The occasional, beautifully composed shot of nature makes an appearance amongst scenes of people wandering or resting. It is not a gloomy book, but one that also is not afraid to accept life without illusions.
