ENRIO Meeting Prague

The first biannual ENRIO meeting of 2019 was held in Prague on 25-26 March 2019 hosted by the Czech Academy of Sciences. The meeting gathered 40 participants from 31 member organizations. Prior to the meeting, two parallel working groups were held on training and ENRIO statutes. In the meeting, ENRIO Chair Sanna-Kaisa Spoof presented the ENRIO Action Plan for 2019-2022 including the roadmap of turning ENRIO into a legal entity.

New board 

The ENRIO Board was announced in Prague meeting by ENRIO Chair Sanna-Kaisa Spoof. The new Board consists of the Chair and Vice-chairs Maura Hiney from the Irish Health Research Board (HRB) and Hjördis Czesnick from the German Research Ombudsman office. Kalle Videnoja, who is employed as a coordinator of international affairs in TENK, is assingned to ENRIO’s secretary. The Board asks to contact Board members in all things concerning ENRIO.

ENRIO's First Congress on Research Integrity Practice

The first ENRIO Congress is held in Finland on 5–7 October 2020. The ENRIO2020 Congress is aimed for research integrity officers, research directors, science funding organisations, research networks, and other professionals in the field of research integrity and research ethics, members of ethics committees, and university teachers and researchers. The Congress presents an excellent opportunity to keep abreast of the latest thinking and insights on current issues and best practice in the field of research integrity, and expand your network of colleagues across Europe.

New ENRIO member

The new Swiss member in ENRIO is the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). The SNSF was welcomed as a new ENRIO member at the bi-annual meeting in Prague.

ENRIO Handbook: Recommendations for the Investigation of Research Misconduct

The publication is called a Handbook. It is a kind of consensus document although representing different views on different topics reflecting a diversified European picture when it comes to experiences and lessons learned. The Handbook has a set of “practical step by step” recommendations or things to consider when dealing with possible research misconduct or unaccepted practices. It is the presumption that such recommendations will be especially important for countries who, for different reasons, are struggling with setting up a uniform and robust system for dealing with research misconduct or integrity but hopefully it will also serve as a basis for discussions and considerations in countries with established RI structures be it on a local and/or national level.

ENRIO Website: Country reports

On 20 May 2019, the country reports of the ENRIO member countries were published on the ENRIO website (www.enrio.eu/country-reports). More than 20 country reports give an overview of the diverse national institutional structures on research integrity (in progress) in Europe, with its similarities and differences.

ENERI: REC/RIO Policy Group Meeting

During a European Network of Research Ethics and Research Integrity (ENERI) stakeholder workshop in 2017 the participating stakeholders coming from academia, scientific journals, policy makers, funding organizations claimed that for strengthening this joint support a more developed exchange between RECs and RIOs in the European Research Area is desirable. Against this background the European representatives of RECs (EUREC) and RIOs (ENRIO) as part of ENERI met in Prague (26 March 2019) to form a REC/RIO policy group.

ENERI Final conference

At its FINAL CONFERENCE the EU-funded Horizon2020 project ENERI will bring together leading ethics experts, researchers, policy makers, representatives from industry, research funding organizations, civil society and other stakeholders to test and discuss the concepts and products developed during the 3 years term of project duration. The Final Conference will take place 28-29 October 2019 in Brussels.

WCRI 2019: Active involvement of representatives of ENRIO member organziations 

One of the key conferences in Research Integrity is the World Conference on Research Integrity (WCRI) which will be held in Hong Kong from 2 to 5 June 2019. The World Conference will be attended by numerous representatives of the ENRIO member organization. A selection of contributions from ENRIO representatives can be found on the ENRIO website.

Austria: First Train-the-Trainer for Good Scientific Practice

In November 2018, the first Train-the-Trainer for Good Scientific Practice (GSP) of the Austrian Agency for Scientific Integrity (OeAWI) took place in Vienna. The OeAWI considers itself a driving force for the implementation of the Standards of GSP in research. In response to requests of member organizations of the OeAWI, the agency has developed this training program entitled Train-the-trainer, which is to demonstrate didactic methods fostering GSP.

United Kingdom: New resources on the UKRIO website

There are many new documents on the UKRIO website. For example a primer document on research integrity in research involving animals or a collection of useful research integrity resources from other organizations. Furthermore you can find Integrity in Practice, a resource developed by UKRIO and the Royal Society as part of their collaborative work on research culture. It is a toolkit for those who wish to continue to improve research integrity and support a positive research culture within their organisations.

France: OFIS - French research integrity officers publish a "Guide to Recording and Processing Reports relating to Research Integrity"

France’s national network of research integrity officers (RESINT) has published in December 2018 its “Guide to Recording and Processing Reports relating to Research Integrity”. The primary purpose of the guide is to help all research integrity officers to put in place a procedure for responding to reports of violations of research integrity within their institutions and organizations, in keeping with the best practices which apply in this field.

SOPs4RI - Standard Operating Procedures for Research Integrity

SOPs4RI (Standard Operating Procedures for Research Integrity) is a four-year (2019-2022), multi-partner project funded by the European Commission. SOPs4RI aims to stimulate transformational processes across European Research Performing Organisations and Research Funding Organisations (RPOs & RFOs). The objective of SOPs4RI is to promote good research practices that align with the principles and norms of the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity.

Path2Integrity - Rotatory role-playing and role-models to enhance the research integrity culture

When students study research integrity in a traditional way, they may learn how the subject helps them on an individual level in their own scientific projects, while still underestimating the relevance of research integrity for a knowledge-based society, both within and outside of scientific research. In order to help open this door for students into an honest, reliable, respectful, and accountable scientific community, the Horizon2020 project Path2Integrity was established in January 2019 to support young researchers, bachelor's and master's students, and school students older than 16 in understanding via innovative methods what research is and why it is important to actively engage in dialogue on research norms

PRO-RES - PROmoting integrity in the use of RESearch results

The PRO-RES project aims at promoting integrity in the use of research results in evidence based policy, focusing on non-medical research. The project will build a research ethics and integrity framework devised cooperatively with, and seen as acceptable by, the full range of relevant stakeholders (researchers, Research Performing Organizations, Research Funding Organizations, policy makers).

European Network of Research Ethics Committees (EUREC)

EUREC is a network that brings together already existing national Research Ethics Committees (RECs) associations, networks or comparable initiatives on the European level. The network promotes capacity building and assistance for local RECs to cooperate in the EU European Research Area. As an umbrella organization the network interlinks European RECs with other bodies relevant in the field of research involving human participants like the European Commission’s ethical review system and the European Medical Association (EMA). 6th World Conference on Research Integrity
02-05 June 2019 in Hong Kong, Asia

The WCRI is the largest and most significant international conference on research integrity. Since the first conference in Lisbon in 2007, it has given researchers, teachers, funding agencies, government officials, journal editors, senior administrators, and research students opportunities to share experiences and to discuss and promote integrity in research. The conference is now a biennial event, and the University of Hong Kong and RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia are proud to co-organize the next world conference.
