Making roads as a Rural Ambassador for South Australia

Last March at the Mt Pleasant show, Scott Carter of Amrabull Park Heritage breeds was awarded the 2019 Mt Pleasant Show Rural Ambassador award.  Scott and his partner Luke run both Highland and Belted Galloways in the Barossa Valley, SA.

Scott then competed in the Central District Shows Association (CDSA) Rural Ambassador finals on the 11th of May where he was interviewed by a representative from the Royal Adelaide Show and the Rural Ambassador State winner from 2018. Later on in the evening he was asked 3 questions in front of the guests from 5 of the districts shows and judged on his public speaking. The 3 questions that were asked were.....

“Can you please tell us about yourself?”

“Please tell us about your show and community involvement”

“Why have you chosen to breed rare and heritage breeds?”

Scott talked about his various show involvement across South Australia as well as his involvement with a variety of associations and societies, including his work as Vice President of the Australian Highland Cattle Society Inc, local poultry club committee involvement and the promotion work that Amrabull Park does to help promote Belted Galloway and Highland cattle, as well as rare and heritage breeds of poultry. He also talked about the importance of the preservation and promotion of heritage breeds and the unique characteristics and qualities that many of these old heritage breeds. He brought to attention the quality beef that both Belted Galloway and Highland cattle produce along with a couple other features of the breeds. Scott was awarded CDSA Rural Ambassador 2019 runner-up, however after his talk on heritage breeds, the president of the Mt Barker Show Society has since invited Scott to talk more about rare and heritage breeds at their AGM in July. Scott has also been contacted by someone involved with the SA Junior Heifer Expo with the suggestion of doing a talk on Heritage breeds of cattle for the participants to learn more about breeds such as Belted Galloway and Highland Cattle. The Rural Ambassador program has really opened up some great opportunities for Scott to continue his passion for the promotion and preservation of rare and heritage breeds. Amrabull Park will also be sending a Belted Galloway heifer, along with 3 Highland heifers to the SA Junior Heifer Expo this year to expose the breeds to the next generation of beef producers.
