Sawmilling South Africa News
Can you believe it, its that time of year once more, “AGM Time”. It seems as if it was just yesterday that we were at the 2018 AGM and here we are in 2019. This years AGM will once again be held at SAFCA House up in JHB and we have a stella line up for members that we are convinced will be of great value to all sawmillers.

Firstly we have the renowned economist and political commentator, Dr Roelof Botha, who will be addressing us on the “New” South Africa under Mr Cyril Ramaposa’s leadership which certainly holds interests for the future of the country and indeed our sector.
Dr Botha has also spent a lot of time in Angola in the past year and will be telling us of investment opportunities in that country as well. We are sure that this talk will be of interest to all sawmillers both large and small.

We also have Mrs Zelda Burchell, a chemical engineer and expert on energy efficiency and carbon tax, of Cova Advisory talking to us about the new carbon tax law which is set to be introduced to SA on the 1st June this year. This we know will be of great interest to all sawmillers and one not to be missed.

Dr Brand Wessels of the University of Stellenbosch and Mr Abe Steers of SATAS, who needs no introduction to the sawmilling sector, will be making a presentation on the “New Additional Specification to SANS 1783, how it will be implemented and how it will affect sawmillers. This is of critical importance to all millers who produce structural timber.  So, we encourage all mill owners and managers to attend even if its just to hear the practicalities of this great development.

We will also hear from members of the associations executive committee about some interesting timber promotional incentives and how we sawmillers can hitch our wagon to the whole “green economy” movement.

Then there are the usual AGM items to be dealt with, so all in all we expect to have another informative gathering of sawmillers with a chance to network, discuss and joke about the challenges facing the timber industry.

On that positive note we sign off for the month and encourage you to keep cutting straight and drying flat until next time.
