Welcome to the Australian Centre for Value-Based Health Care

Last night the Australian Centre for Value-Based Health Care was officially launched at an event in Melbourne. The launch featured a case study presentation by Dental Health Service Victoria’s Chief Executive, Dr Deborah Cole, and Executive Director Value Based Healthcare Implementation, Susan McKee, on how Dental Health Services Victoria is transforming oral healthcare through value-based health care.

During the evening a panel discussed the future of value-based health care in Australia and their discussions will be shortly available as a podcast. Three research papers were also launched and are available below.

The Australian Centre for Value-Based Health Care aims to act as a nexus for the growing value-based health care movement in Australia, bringing together educational and training opportunities, quality research and best practice case studies in an easily accessible hub. We are actively seeking partners for our work, so if you are interested in education, training, research or events related to value-based health care we encourage you to contact us.

Let's work together to purse the creation of a system where health care is funded and delivered with a prime focus on outcomes achieved at an affordable cost for patients and the health system.

Issues Brief No. 31 - Value Based Health Care: Setting the scene for Australia

A value-based approach to health care provides a patient-centric way to design and manage health systems. This Issues Brief considers Australia’s alignment with a value-based approach and identifies important enablers that are already present, but outside a coordinated national strategy. The Brief also examines international evidence, while recognising the need for building evidence in the Australian context where value must be considered in the context of universal health care and our health system. Recommendations are made for enabling value-based health care through public policy in Australia.

Deeble Issues Brief No. 32 - Re-orienting funcing from volume to value in public dental services

Deeble Issues Brief No. 32: focusses on funding reforms that will be required to achieve value‑based health care for public dental health in Australia. Using Dental Health Service Victoria’s learnings from a value-based health care implementation and funding model reform, this Issues Brief draws on local and international examples that provide the rationale and evidence for funding reforms that maximise value and outcomes for patients, funders and the health system.

Deeble Evidence Brief No. 18 - Assessing the Value of Accreditation to Health Systems and Organisations

Accreditation is a process of external peer review to assess the performance of a healthcare facility in relation to agreed healthcare accreditation standards. In Australia, the requirement is mandatory accreditation against the Australian National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards.

This Health Policy Evidence Brief from the Deeble Institute for Health Policy Research and the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) adopts the Quadruple Aim framework to assess the value of accreditation to health services.

The brief calls for the need to develop a research-based approach to develop a common narrative on what constitutes value, so that value relating to interventions such as accreditation can be more appropriately assessed.
