Palm Beach County's effort to create mangrove islands in Lake Worth Lagoon near El Cid neighborhood marked a milestone with the completion of phase 1 of the Tarpon Cove project.
During this phase the County partnered with the Florida Inland Navigation District whose contractor moved close to 80,000 cubic yards of sand that will be used to create the islands.
The next phase of the project is expected to begin in June and last until August with the placement of sand being received through the Rybovich Marina expansion, this work and all future work will be day time operation only.
Once the additional sand has been placed the County’s contractor will begin to grade the sand piles and create three intertidal mangrove islands and oyster reefs between Sunset Road and Avila Road, this work in anticipated to be completed between August and October.
If everything goes according to schedule Commissioner Weiss hopes to be helping staff and volunteers with the planting mangroves and spartina this November.
Read more about the project. The Tarpon Cove project was one of 22 projects nationwide, and the only project in Florida, selected by United States Fish and Wildlife Service for $1 million federal grant that will be matched with state and local funds to construct future phases of the project.
Commissioner Weiss held three town hall meetings last week. There were new and familiar faces. Commissioner Weiss talked about his background, issues that are important to him and his vision for the future. People asked questions, voiced concerns and shared ideas.
Commissioner Weiss wants to thank the City of Greenacres, City of West Palm Beach and the County for allowing him to use their facilities for each of the meetings.
