Author Interview
Banyas’ vibrant skills as a storyteller, poet and documentarian are brought to bear on this haunting chronicle of a southern Ohio town in the sleepy Cold War days of middle class white prosperity at the dawn of the civil rights era...a detective story, a deep dive into memory, and an unwavering look at her hometown’s history, hidden in plain sight."
–Louise Steinman, author of The Crooked Mirror: A Memoir of Polish Jewish Reconciliation.
Hillsboro, Ohio protest, 1954-56
I am in Mrs. Mallory's class. She is reading us Charlotte's Web by EB White.. Mothers and children appear outside the window, carrying signs--MUST HILLSBORO LAG BEHIND THE SOUTH? -- then disappear, then appear the next day.  OUR CHILDREN PLAY TOGETHER. WHY CAN'T THEY LEARN TOGETHER? Then disappear. Everyday.  All year. Outside the window  -- Susan
You take it in stride.  - Elsie Steward Young, Marching Mother, just had her 103rd birthday!
Is there a sense of justice even in young children? I thought about things a great deal.
- Philip Partridge, County Engineer
Friendship, it's perfect. Just write 'The End.'  -- David Ornette Cherry, composer for The Hillsboro Story theatre work.  "Friendship" was the last recording made in the old auditorium before Hillsboro High School was torn down.
The court's decision in Brown--sweeping, straight forward, simply written, and unanimous--gained the status of a Magna Carta in the black community...laymen saw it as a mandate to end all segregation.  - The Honorable Constance Baker Motley, right between Dayton NAACP attorneys, Russell Carter and James McGee, Clemons v. Board of Ed., Hillsboro, OH, 1956.
When Michael shared his expose of hometown history at the dinner table at Connie's house, everything went silent, Michael recalls. Dead silence. Pass the peas please.
Dr. Michael Kean, co-author  with Dr. William Glatt, Hillsboro, Ohio, A Case Study in School Desegregation, 1970.
My mother was a determined woman. She taught us we had worth. -- Eleanor Curtis Cumberland, daughter of Imogene Curtis, leader of the Marching Mothers
If you were Charlotte, what word would you weave into the web, to save the world? I ask  Mrs.Clara Alfrieda Goodrich. CURIOSITY, she says.  A story is an unfinished product. It is important to keep the story alive.
