June 13: McDonnell Foundation 21st Century Postdoctoral Fellowship Award
$200,000
The JSMF Fellowship is a unique opportunity for students with an interest in and an aptitude for complexity science who are in the final stages of completing their Ph.D. and looking to make a significant change in direction for their first postdoctoral fellowship (field of study, model organism, theory vs experimental, etc.) that will either be difficult or impossible without an external source of funding. The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is currently accepting applications for the CPRIT TRIUMPH Postdoctoral Fellowship in Translational Cancer Research. This three-year fellowship provides basic, translational, and clinical training and aims to further develop talented Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.s into successful clinical/translational research scientists. Logo design contest for annual Keck Center Research Conference

The winning design will be awarded a $250 prize. The theme is Precision Environmental Health: Integrating Environmental Sciences, Genomics, and Data Science to Advance Human Health. Consideration should be given to the reproducibility of the design. Submissions must be accompanied by a detailed legend which credits all contributors and describes the components. The North American Development Bank & the Next Quarter Century
June 6, 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
The Hon. Henry Cuellar, Ph.D., U.S. Representative, 28th District of Texas, will speak about the NADB which was created under the auspices of NAFTA to finance infrastructure projects that would ease the environmental burden of commercial activity along the U.S.-Mexico border. NADB executives, elected officials and experts will examine the bank’s future under the USMCA. Faculty, staff and students receive complimentary admission. More.
Anthony Brandt: Lifelong Creativity
June 6, noon, Moody Center for the Arts
Drawing on his book, The Runaway Species, co-authored with neuroscientist David Eagleman, Dr. Brandt will illustrate that creativity is a universal feature of human cognition and discuss ways to cultivate this unique human ability. Free + open to the public. More.
2019 Summer HPC Bootcamp at Rice
June 10-14, BRC
In this five-day accelerated course on High-Performance Computing, leading HPC faculty and staff members from Rice serve as instructors. Using Rice’s shared computing infrastructure, hands-on laboratory sessions supported by the instructor and lab assistants will be offered each day, allowing participants to practice what is being taught in the class sessions. More.
Live Podcast Recording: 13 Minutes to the Moon

To mark the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, the BBC World Service has launched a new podcast series that celebrates the people and technology that took humanity to the moon. Rice Synthetic biologists hack bacterial sensors
Synthetic biologists hacked bacterial sensing with a plug-and-play system that could be used to mix-and-match thousands of sensory inputs and genetic outputs. The tech has wide-ranging implications for diagnostics, the study of deadly pathogens, & environmental monitoring. In the study's final phase, grad student Kathryn Brink performed and replicated almost 1,000 separate experiments to isolate the previously unknown function of a bacterial two-component sensor! Read more.
Grad student leads development of new 3D printing technique
Recent Rice grad Bagrat Grigoryan led the development of a new technique for 3D printing tissue with entangled vascular networks similar to the body’s natural passageways for blood, air and other vital fluids, up until now one of the biggest roadblocks to generating functional tissue replacements. The lab envisions bioprinting becoming a major component of medicine within the next two decades. Read more.
