Baptism Sunday

baptismThis Sunday, June 2, is Baptism Sunday. Everyone is invited to the church at 9:00 a.m. for breakfast. Bring a finger food dish to share. It will be helpful if you bring your dish several minutes before the starting time. Examples of breakfast finger foods are hard boiled eggs, mini quiche, cheese, ham, mini muffins, sweet rolls, or fruit, etc. Paper supplies and drink will be provided.

Our worship service will be held in our sanctuary at 10:00 a.m. where Ellie Wenger will be baptized and sign the membership book.

Nursery During Summer Months

handsDuring the summer months parents will be able to take young children to the nursery during the worship hour. However, parents should expect to remain with their children, as there will not be volunteers providing childcare.

Graduation Open-House Invitation

celebrationDoug and Cindy Baker invite everyone to an open house for their grandson, Jaiden, on Sunday, June 2, 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. at the Baker home (310 Oak Lane). Jaiden has been living with Doug and Cindy while finishing up at Goshen High School, and he attended Berkey regularly throughout elementary and middle school. Jaiden will be heading to IU Bloomington in August.

Summer Sunday School

Sunday SchoolSummer Sunday School begins next Sunday, June 9. You will have the choice of  an input/discussion option in the sanctuary and an active option elsewhere. A full schedule is posted on the bulletin board by the mailboxes.

June 9 Class Options:
  • Input/Discussion: "The Food We Were Born to Eat," led by Ben Buckwalter.
  • Activity: James & Trish Yoder will lead a Frisbee golf scramble that will incorporate some word puzzles on each hole. A scramble consists of two or more players forming a team,  emphasizing fun without the pressure of players keeping individual scores. Each player hits a tee shot on each hole, but everyone plays from the spot of the best shot. Please bring a Frisbee for yourself and any extras to share with others.

Custodian Opening

We pray for Berkey members who have shared joys and concerns during the worship service, by using the blue prayer cards, or through individual concerns specifically expressed to us. All prayer requests are kept confidential. Additionally, we pray for the life of Berkey Ave, the community surrounding it, and the wider world.

Getting to Know

Eleanor

Eleanor Nafziger

I was born on November 19, 1935 to Harold and Evelyn (Short) Stuckey in Stryker, Ohio. When I was 7 we moved to Archbold, Ohio. I lived in the Archbold area until the death of my husband, Gerald Nafziger, who died June 11, 1996, after which I moved to Goshen to be near one of my children. I have two daughters, Beverly (David) Krabill and Sandy (Mark) Zehr and one son, Lynn (Terri) Nafziger.

After graduation from high school, I worked for about 5 years at a bank in Archbold. When my children were older, I had a part-time job in the office at Yoder & Frey Farm Machinery Auction. I also got to know some of our pastors quite well as I worked in the church office at Berkey for about 14 years.

Some of the things I like to do are read, jigsaw puzzles, word games, and sewing. Each year for Christmas I make ornaments for my grandchildren. I cling to the promise that God will never leave or forsake me.

Karis and MCC Team

Karis Neufeld with
The MCC Burkina Faso Team

Karis has now spent nine and a half months with the MCC SALT program and has been enjoying her most recent months in Burkina Faso. She is focused on finishing up a couple projects and meeting some personal goals in the last six weeks of her term. For one of those projects, she provides one on one training on data collection and reports for a partner whose goal is to support vulnerable children with school fees and practical apprenticeships. She is hoping to accomplish a personal goal as well, by sewing a few articles of clothing out of traditional fabrics with the help of her host sister, the tailor. You can read more about her time on her blog.

We want to hear from you, but it may take a while for us to meet and discuss your concern. Thanks for being a part of this vibrant community of God’s people.  —The SLT
