We will be serving at the Highland Blessing Dinner on Thursday, June 6. If you would like to help serve or host a table, come to the Highland Center on the corner of Olive and Highland at 5:30 p.m. and enjoy being a part of this worthwhile neighborhood event.
On your trip to the grocery this week, add a box of cornbread/muffin mix to your cart for the Noel Food Pantry. Donations will be collected in the rear and front of the Sanctuary on Sunday, June 2.
Also on Sundays, June 2 and 9, we will celebrate our Special Day Pentecost Offering. One half of this offering supports the Disciples' new church development program and the other half The Caddo-Bossier ARC. Since 1954 The ARC has been providing services to meet the significant needs of adults and children with disabilities in our community. A special offering envelope will be provided for your gift.

ByGeorge
Most edibles these days have a “best by” date. An expired item isn’t necessarily unusable, but it may not look or taste as it was intended. These labeled dates are helpful: expired milk - needs to go, expired can of vegetables - probably ok, expired honey or fruitcake – honey never goes bad and why are you keeping fruitcake anyway?
We, as a church, have hundreds of resources, traditions, and practices, and none of them have a “best by” date. Since it worked once (or we thought it worked) we are reluctant to get rid of it. Along with wonderful traditions, efficient equipment, and helpful practices, we have some closets stocked with now sad looking decorations, old books that no one is going to read, and miscellaneous pieces of electronics from the last fifty years – not really in the way of anything, just taking up a bit of space. However, when traditions and practices involve people, we need to be a bit more careful, and we need to have permission to let go of what isn’t helpful anymore.
Part of my responsibly to you is to make sure all is as “up to date” as possible for the next minister. As we get into our self-study later this year, we will certainly be looking at all aspects of ministry and rightfully demanding effectiveness in what we continue to support.
For now, you can help me with a more mundane task – getting the church directory updated. I’ve discovered many of your “preferred numbers” to call are land lines that you longer have. We are passing around current directories in Sunday school and before worship for you to check and update if needed. You may also call or email the church office with updated info.

KHCC has enrolled in Epiphany, a ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ.) Over the course of the next six months, our congregation will comprehensively examine our present realities and develop plans for a faithful future. We will be encouraged to look closely at the “why” of what we do. When we are clear on why we exist, we can discover innovative ways to do ministry and transform our community both inside and outside our walls.
Our office has started gathering data about KHCC – membership, attendance, financials, building details, etc. to send to the Epiphany office so that a detailed picture of our current congregation can be created. In the summer, a consultant will visit to meet with leaders and church members.
Later in the year, two retreats will be held to help us to first clarify our dreams and visions and then develop specific plans to revitalize our ministry. Our consultant will not be here to “tell us what to do”, but to assist us working through the steps of seeing facts and demographics, listening to one another, dreaming, and planning. Dates for all these events will be announced as soon as they are finalized.

Pentecost Offering received June 2nd and 9th
This year’s Pentecost offering will be divided between The Arc Caddo-Bossier and the Disciple’s General Ministries – part of that offering will stay in the Great River Region to start and uphold new churches, and the rest is used across the United States and Canada by New Church Ministry to support the recruiting, assessing, training and coaching of new church leaders. Our Disciple church planters remain committed to answering God’s call . . . to serve their neighbors, spread the gospel, and make more Disciples.
