Polishing Your Writing Skills
for State Government Agency Careers

Tuesday, June 4, 2019
10:00AM ASU & UCD / 11:00AM NMSU / 1:00 PM GT

This free webinar will provide insight into the professional and technical writing skills that are needed by geoscience students pursuing careers in state government agencies. Speakers will discuss skills that are developed during students’ undergraduate and graduate academic training, types of written products that are developed by geoscientists in state agencies, training and professional development opportunities for improving and expanding writing skills, and advice for students on how to acquire the needed writing skills as they prepare for and pursue their career path.
This webinar will:
  • Explore the types of written products developed in state government agencies
  • Feature advice for students on how to acquire the necessary skills as they prepare for entry into this sector
  • Explore how these agencies and academic departments work together to help prepare students
Speakers are:
  • Steve Holbrook, Professor and Head of Department, Department of Geosciences, Virginia Tech
  • David Spears, State Geologist of Virginia, Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy

Geo-Institute & Engineering Mechanics Institute
Joint Conference at Caltech
Pasadena, CA
June 18 - 21, 2019

The conference will have a track on biomaterials and bio-engineering with several mini symposium categories that align with CBBG projects. The abstract submission system for the EMI2019 is now open and will accept contributions until January 30th, 2019.

Mini-symposium #2 – Bio-inspired interfaces (proposed by Dr. A. Martinez, UC Davis) aims to unravel the mechanisms for bio-inspiration and to further advance modeling and prediction of the response of bio-inspired and biological interface systems that transfer force, mass, heat, and/or electricity.

Mini-symposium #3 – Bio-inspired burrowing, drilling, and excavation (proposed by Dr. J. Tao, ASU) seeks to foster broad discussions on advances towards bio-inspired penetration, drilling and excavation in soil and rock, with particular emphasis on the fundamental mechanisms employed by burrowing organisms such as bivalves, earthworms, ants, moles, roots. Experimental, numerical and robotic contributions are welcome.

Mini-symposium #6 – Mechanics of bio-inspired multi-functional systems (proposed by Dr. C. Arson, Georgia Tech) aims to explore the mechanics of multi-functional biological systems, such as plant roots, which serve both as both anchorage and fluid conduits. Multi-scale approaches, network dynamics, bio-inspired design, visualization techniques and big data paradigms will be discussed.

Mini-symposium #7 - Bio-inspired geoprobes and geosensors (proposed by Dr. D. Cortes, New Mexico State University) seeks to highlight specifically CBBG’s contributions to the development of bio-inspired underground exploration devices.

Please visit emi2019.exordo.com to submit an abstract to MS#2, MS#3, MS#6, MS#7 or to explore the rest of the accepted mini-symposia within the biomaterials and bio-engineering track.
