Weekly Update from Your Alderman

May 31, 2019

Dear Neighbor,

We had a phenomenal turnout for our first 48th Ward Housing Committee meeting last night. More than 50 neighbors came out to begin to proactively put together a vision for how our community grows in the years to come. Themes that came up last night included a desire to maintain the community's economic diversity as well as our diversity of housing options; concerns about condo deconversions; and creative ideas to support accessible, affordable housing for all in our community. I look forward to continuing to meet with this group to develop a community-driven framework for our community's growth.

I have been spending a lot of time out in the community meeting with block clubs and community groups, and joined my fellow aldermen Matt Martin and Andre Vasquez for a meeting with the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce membership yesterday. I am looking forward to attending next week's State of Edgewater and the State of Uptown on June 14.

Wednesday's City Council meeting was historic, the first meeting of the new Mayor and new City Council. We voted on the reorganization of the Council and new rules, including live streaming of Committee meetings beginning in the fall. I was voted in as the Chairman of the Housing & Real Estate Committee and as Vice Chairman of the Public Safety Committee, both roles I will use to enhance housing opportunity and safety in our community and across the city. Additionally, the reorganization included the creation of a new Committee on Ethics and Good Governance, which will take up ethical reforms. This week the Chicago Board of Ethics unveiled a series of recommendations of reforms for the Council, which I support. Yesterday's sweeping federal indictment of Alderman Ed Burke, including 14 counts of racketeering, further highlights the need to reform our City government. I am committed to enacting ethical reforms to the Chicago City Council and representing our community honorably and ethically.

Please join me this Tuesday, June 4, 6:30pm, at the Broadway Armory, 5917 N. Broadway, for a public safety meeting with 20th District Commander Sean Loughran and 24th Police District Commander Michelle Rubino. As we head into summer, public safety remains my top priority, and this meeting is an opportunity to hear from our local commanders and to learn how we can all support greater safety throughout our community. I hope to see you there. Please reach out to my Public Safety Liaison Alan Oviedo with any questions or ideas regarding safety in the community at alan@48thward.org.

Yesterday I sent out a listing of our community programming throughout the summer. My office partners with community organizations across the ward to activate the ward all summer long as a way to build community and to positively take up public space. Click here to view this recap, and as other events are planned this summer, I will include them in my weekly newsletter.

Tomorrow is a big day in the Ward, with plenty of events to help kick off summer:

Please join me in wishing our State Representatives Kelly Cassidy, Greg Harris, and State Senator Heather Steans luck on their last day in session. They are getting some great work done in Springfield!

Enjoy your weekend.

Sincerely,

Harry Osterman
Alderman, 48th Ward

Development Update

5356 N. Sheridan

A community meeting was held on Thursday, May 23, regarding a proposed development at 5356 N. Sheridan. The proposal is for a four-story, all residential building with 50 units, including 10 affordable on-site, and 12 parking spaces. The surrounding community voted in favor of the proposed development and the project is moving forward.

5661 N. Glenwood
A community meeting was held on Tuesday, May 28, regarding a zoning change for the property at 5661 N. Glenwood. The owner of the property is going to renovate the building for his single family home. The plan is to downzone the property back to its original zoning after all permits have been granted. The community voted in unanimous support of this zoning change.

If you have any questions about either of these projects, please email harry@48thward.org.
