Why Join a CSA ?

There are a lot of reasons to join a CSA and buy a share in one of our farm's harvest. Some folks join for the amazingly fresh food. Some people enjoy the connection to a specific farm and farmer. Others just want to support their local food system and are looking for a simple one-stop way to do so. Talk to our farmers on Sunday and see what type of CSA options would work for you!

BUY LOCAL:
There many tangible and intangible benefits associated with buying local products in your community. Spending your money on locally produced goods and services keeps the community economically viable. Just like the unique character of each CSA farm, economies also benefit from the local flavor of these small businesses. Buying local conserves natural resources, reliance on fossil fuels is greatly reduced due to less shipping requirements. CSA farms do their part to protect the environment, most of these operations incorporate organic or natural methods that work in harmony with nature.

Beginning on our first outdoor market, which incidentally ushers in our 7th year anniversary, on Sunday, May 5th, the Saratoga Spa State Park and the Spa City Farmers’ Market, and all our vendors will no longer be utilizing one-time-use , plastic items. Such as: plastic cutlery, plastic bags, plastic straws, etc. Instead, we will be using biodegradable bags, of corn and bamboo ,and other alternative options for cutlery, etc. So , don’t forget your reusable bags this year forthcoming, and plan & prepare accordingly! Thank You for your continued support !

Moon Garden & Haven Hill Farm

Master Gardener Judy Leon and Herbalist Colleen Zorbas will show you how and why to grow a medicinal garden with four seasonal workshops. The workshops will be located at Judy’s beautiful, Haven Hill Farm in Washington County. Each class will run approximately three hours.

A medicinal herb garden is defined as a garden planted with the goal of serving the needs of your general health and well-being.

You can grow wellness in whatever space you have! Herbs are beautiful and very useful in your landscape. Most herbs are not difficult to grow, and many produce lovely flowers and/or interesting foliage. Many herbs are also pest resistant and are fantastic companion plants to your vegetables.

In these series of workshops we will be going over the type of herbs to grow, and the medicinal properties of these herbs. We will be identifying the different stages of growth and how to recognize the plants. Each workshop will feature a farm and plant walk, and a preparation of an Earth medicinal. We'll be rounding out our menu for the day with our pulled pork and smoked chicken sandwiches, smoked Scotch eggs, bratwurst, bacon on a stick and pulled pork mac and cheese. Don't forgot our combo plates comprised of meat and 2 sides. Our sides will be coleslaw, baked beans and maple mashed sweet potatoes. Once again we will be offering our BBQ Bento boxes. Purchase your BPA-free, microwave, dishwasher and freezer safe box for just $2 and let us fill it with your favorites from our menu. When you bring the box back to us in subsequent weeks, we'll take $1 off your meal.

HEALTHY GOURMET KITCHEN:

New product!! Our curry seasoning blend is a mild curry that's great on vegetables, fish, chicken, pork or in soups. Recipe included for an easy vegetable curry that comes together in minutes and is great for using up vegetables you have on hand.

Easy Vegetable Curry
1 onion chopped
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1 tsp Health Gourmet Kitchen Curry
1 small can chopped tomato or 1 large fresh
1 sweet potato peeled and cubed (about an 1/2 inch)
1 small squash (zucchini, acorn, or other)
2 cups broccoli
1 cup vegetable broth
1 cup cauliflower
1 - 2 cups vegetables (whatever you have on hand, can be fresh or frozen)
Cooked brown rice

Heat saute pan over medium heat. Add olive oil and chopped onion, saute 5 minutes. Add curry powder and cook 1 minute. Add fresh vegetables(except zucchini), tomatoes and vegetable broth. Bring to boil, reduce heat to simmer and simmer covered for 15 minutes or until sweet potatoes are tender. Stir in frozen veggies and zucchini (if using) and heat for 4 - 5 minutes. Serve over cooked brown rice (about 1/2 cup rice per person).
